• InnoCamp: How Russian and Finnish Students Reinvent Old Spaces

  This April, students from Russia and Finland joined each other at the first-ever session of the InnoCamp project. Tasked with developing business strategies for real companies, the students had to turn a Helsinki airfield into a hub for small aircraft, a disused railcar factory into a creative space, a former Kotka port into a business hub, and more. On May 12-17, the participants met in Kotka (Finland) to finish what they started during the remote stage of the project. ITMO.NEWS learned about the projects and the kind of experience that InnoCamp offers students.

• French Embassy Counselor Visits ITMO University

  ITMO continues to develop and expand its international partnerships and collaborations. This week, the University welcomed Abdo Michel Malac, the Counselor for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in Russia. Mr. Malac met the staff of the Faculty of Physics and Engineering and spoke of the Embassy’s willingness to offer support in conducting joint Russian-French events. He also attended the opening of a new Russian-French laboratory at ITMO University.

• APAIE 2019: ITMO University at the Pacific Region’s Biggest Education Event

  The 14th Conference & Exhibition of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) has come to a close in Malaysia. Per tradition, ITMO University was represented at the 5-100 Russian Academic Excellence Project’s exhibition area. Each of the project’s participating universities has its own booth where they can present their programs and informational materials.

• University of Twente’s Stefano Stramigioli: Robotics Is About Giving Machines Life

  Stefano Stramigioli first got into robotics after watching Star Wars as a kid. Today, he is the chairman of the Robotics and Mechatronics Group at the University of Twente (the Netherlands). Last year, his research team developed the world’s smallest breast cancer diagnostics robot. The group’s researchers collaborate with major companies like KUKA and Siemens, and develop drones and other robotic systems. Prof. Stramigioli, who is co-heading the ITMO Bio-mechatronics and Energy-Efficient Robotics Lab and recently came to ITMO University to give a series of lectures for students and young researchers, sat down with us to talk about medical robotics, working with ITMO, and finding inspiration.

• SURF Stanford US-Russia Forum: Science Communication and Diplomacy

  The SURF Stanford US-Russia Forum is a year-long program for students and specialists from Russia and the USA who want to study the most relevant issues of today together. Each year, participants of SURF get to work alongside each other on research projects in the fields of politics, science, business, and others, to complete an unusual research/diplomacy program and to present the results of their work at Stanford University. This year, one of the program’s participants was Daria Denisova, the deputy head of ITMO University’s Science Communication Center. She spoke with ITMO.NEWS about taking part in SURF and getting to work with a space scientist from MIT.

• Clarivate Analytics Expert Shares International Academic Collaboration Insights

  Collaborations with leading scientists and co-authorship of scientific works are a major goal on the Russian universities’ path to rising higher in international rankings. For instance, the presence of highly-cited researchers, along with Nobel and Fields laureates, is one of the assessment criteria in the Shanghai University Ranking (ARWU), in which ITMO University debuted this year. Pavel Kasyanov, a scientometrics expert at Clarivate Analytics (the current owner of Web of Science), came to ITMO’s SCAMT international laboratory to discuss how Web of Science can help find new partners, the importance of citations and more; we provide the highlights.

• ITMO Students Study Circular Economy in Latvia

  On September 30, a course on ‘Circular economy and sustainable natural resources management” was launched as part of the CREA-RE-RU international project. Led by the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering’s teacher Anastasia Pavlova, four ITMO students majoring in ‘Ecological engineering’ and ‘Industrial ecology and cleaner production’ visited the University of Latvia to work on real-life tasks in the field of resource conservation. • New Head of US English Language Office on How to Improve English-Language Education in Russia and the World

  Universities all over the world are putting efforts into creating an English-language culture among their students, professors and researchers, as such knowledge lets universities reach out and enter the international education market, explained Kelli Odhuu, new head of the regional English Language Office at the US Embassy, during her visit to ITMO University’s International Office. She learned about the university’s efforts to popularize the English language and spoke about the general issues that universities worldwide encounter in this endeavor.

• Scientists Form New Road Map for Photonics and Quantum Communications Development

  Participants of the international roundtable discussion, which was held as part of the METANANO-2017 Conference in Vladivostok, discussed the future of research in photonics and quantum communications in Russia and outlined the goals for scientific collaborations with other BRICS countries. Representatives of various scientific organizations discussed the next steps that need to be undertaken by researchers and the Russian Ministry of Education and Science to make Russia a leader in photonic technologies research.
