• 5 Things You Didn’t Know About St. Petersburg

  What I love about St. Petersburg is the beautiful architecture, the canals inspired by Venice and Amsterdam, and the rich history. In the 4.5 years that I’ve lived here I also constantly see the city go through changes: the restaurant across from work, for example, has changed at least three times, and even the building I work in has changed significantly from when I first arrived. So I can barely imagine what surprising changes have taken place in the city since its founding in 1703.

• ITMO University Hosts Potanin Scholarship Contest Finals

  The on-site round of the Potanin scholarship contest for Master’s students was held in eight Russian cities between January 22 and February 10. The organizers usually keep the tasks of the on-site round secret, but their format is known to be not unlike that of business simulation games and case competitions. We asked representatives of the Vladimir Potanin Foundation about the aims of the contest and the qualities of a perfect candidate. The candidates themselves told us what motivated them to take part in the competition and the tasks they had to solve during the on-site round.

  News about a court in China ruling that an AI-written text had to be protected by copyright has been circulating online, causing a lot of heated discussions for a couple of days. Can a machine produce something not unlike the creations of human imagination? Can a robot without feelings come up with something original? • ITMO University Researchers Create Complex Nanoparticles with Laser Impulses

  An international research group including ITMO University specialists has experimentally demonstrated a method of generating complex nanoparticles that can be applied in nanophotonics for light adjustment purposes. It has the potential to change the way such materials are produced today and reduce the price of nanoparticle production, which would foster the development of microelectronics. The paper was published in Advanced Functional Materials.

The event brought together leading science communicators in the field of cosmonautics, chemistry and physics, including Mikhail Kurushkin, an associate professor at ITMO University ChemBio Cluster, Dmitriy Epstein, a researcher at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Pavel Piskarev, the chief designer at the Research Institute of Electrophysical Facilities and a coordinator at ITER. • App by ITMO Students will Filter Media Events and Predict their Popularity

  How does one make local news go public, help communities manage the incoming news flow, and offer users a chance to make money off content? Last year at the Vkontakte hackathon, ITMO students Victor Khovansky and Evgeny Varlamov developed an app that can not just categorize media events by topics and categories, but also predict which posts will get the most likes and reposts. The team won the hackathon, and the administration of the Lentach community asked them to continue further developing their project. This February, the application was made available to the public on the Vkontakte social network,  and tested by Lentach community subscribers. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Victor Khovansky talked about their project and its prospects.
