ITMO University Scientists Create App to Calculate COVID-19 Infection Risks Based on Human Behavior
During the current coronavirus pandemic, even leaving one’s home is always a risk. Each time, people are faced with a dilemma: going to the store or ordering delivery? Taking the subway or walking to work? ITMO University researchers have developed an application that demonstrates how tightening or loosening self-isolation and quarantine measures would have an effect on the infection rates in various countries. This project is a part of a larger initiative on the modeling of social processes in the conditions of a pandemic.

Specialists From eScience Research Institute Participate in ICCS 2018
ITMO’s eScience Research Institute staff and students recently participated in the International Conference on Computational Science that took place in the city of Wuxi in China. This event is most important for the field’s scientists, as it sets the trends for future research. The ICCS conference has been running since 2001, and now gathers no less than 350 prominent researchers, which provides for great opportunities to establish new contacts.

GameDev Specialists and Practice-Oriented Education
Today computer game development companies suffer from a lack of decent specialists. There are a lot of programmers but only a few that can develop games. This topic was discussed at the Bytex conference in Saransk (Russia) which was dedicated to business collaboration with IT education. Andrey Karsakov, senior lecturer at the High Performance Computing Department presented the methodology used at ITMO University for the Master’s program “Computer Game Development Technologies”. The approach was supported by industry experts.

ITMO and Finland's XAMK University Strengthen Relationship
Head of School of Translational Information Technologies and of ITMO University’s eScience Research Institute Alexander Boukhanovsky and the Rector of South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) Heikki Saastamoinen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The first step of this new partnership will be the staging of an International Young Scientists Conference. This year the event that will gather the leading experts on high-performance computing and simulation will take place at XAMK’s campus in the town of Kotka.

Scientists Virtually Tested Decision Support System for Medicals
Russian scientists from Saint Petersburg created a computer simulation to test a system coordinating the work of dispatchers, ambulance and hospital staff. The simulation results showed that the service can improve the decision efficiency of medical workers when caring for patients with a suspected heart attack. Now implemented virtually, the system can share some of its elements with medical practices as soon as next year, according to the developers. Their findings were published in the Future Generation Computer Systems.

Modeling Reality: the Fifth "Young Scientists" Conference in Krakov
Thanks to high-performance computing, scientists can now analyze large amounts of data, predict or model different situations and improve various systems. Algorithms and applications that are developed at ITMO are used in medicine, industry, programming and many other areas. Some of them were presented at the fifth 'Young Scientists' international conference in Poland.
