Changing the World: New ITMO Student’s Star Project
Ekaterina Mashina didn’t get enough Unified State Exam points to enter ITMO University, but still enrolled thanks to the ITMO.STARS contest with her IBolit project. This initiative aims to combine the efforts of students and staff from ITMO University, Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University, St. Petersburg State University and Moscow State University for achieving a noble goal: the creation of a system for providing highly qualified premedical care in Russia’s outlying regions. ITMO.NEWS interviewed the student about the details of her project and her plans for the future.

Laeneco Founder Ilya Skorobogatov: How to Take the Japanese Market by Storm
This February, the team behind the telemedical healthcare startup Laeneco won a pitch session organized by ITMO University’s Technopark together with Japanese business experts. This victory gave them the opportunity to bring their hi-tech device for monitoring lung conditions to Fukuoka (Japan), where they participated in the prestigious WARAKU SUMMIT. The project has already made its entrance on the Japanese market, having received the backing of the country’s government. ITMO.NEWS met with Laeneco’s founder Ilya Skorobogatov to find out why the Land of the Rising Sun is so receptive to telemedical services and why launching on the Japanese market is often much easier than doing the same in Europe or the US.

Telemedicine in Russia: How IT Technologies Help Improve the Healthcare System
According to Watson Health, a subdivision of IBM, the amount of data generated by each patient throughout his life exceeds 1000 terabytes. Yet, how can we store this data, effectively manage it as part of a common medical system, and what's most important, is the Russian healthcare system ready for a countrywide introduction of information technologies? The Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre has a medical information system that makes use of an experimental decision support system developed by ITMO University, and the country’s Federal Telemedicine Center has the opportunities to provide remote consultations to more than 5,000 patients a year, as well as training to medical specialists all over Russia. During a recent tour of the Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre, ITMO's Master's students learned about the modern medical information systems (MIS), the prospects of their applications, and the software that medical specialists will need in the future. ITMO.NEWS shares about the novelties of one of Russia's most advanced medical research centers.

How IT Technology Saves Lives
At ITMO University, as part of the orientation week for first-year students of the High-Performance Computing Department, a lecture was given by Alexei Yakovlev, head of Acute Coronary Syndrome Research Laboratory at the Almazov National Medical Research Center. Dr. Yakovlev spoke about how technology, doctors and patients interact with each other today and what the medical center does as part of its partnership with ITMO University.

Telemedicine: How Programmers Visualize Human Internals
Currently, visualization technologies help researchers predict flows, analyze crowd behavior and make medical decisions. ITMO University researchers developed the 3D Human Anatomy Atlas and the interactive «map» of the blood-vascular system. he invention is to be used at universities and in hospitals.
