  • Eco-Paths, Parks, and Glamping: Students Suggest New Tourist Attractions in Leningrad Oblast

    This July, students from ITMO, St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU), and HSE University presented their innovative tourist projects for Leningrad Oblast at the Summer School in Urban Studies. The students’ ideas will be implemented by the administrative bodies of Vyborg, Shlisselburg, and Staraya Ladoga to utilize the potential of these tourist destinations.

  • ITMO University Launches Survey on the Quality of Infrastructure in St. Petersburg

    The National Center for Cognitive Research and the Institute of Design & Urban Studies decided to ask the residents of St. Petersburg to evaluate their satisfaction with living conditions in the city. The survey will show what venues and services the residents would like to see in different districts and will help urbanists make the infrastructure more convenient and functional.

  • Keep Off the Grass! What Are Desire Paths and What We Can Learn From Them?

    Why are desire paths a problem? What happens inside a pedestrian’s mind: why do they break the rules and why can’t paths just be designed “conveniently”? A lecture on urban development was held as part of the online Institute of Design & Urban Studies (IDUS) open days.   • Urban Development Expert On Making Cities More Comfortable to Live In

    What has changed in urban planning over the last 100 years? What future lies ahead of industrial centers? And what do small Northern cities in Norway and Russia share in common? These and other questions were discussed during an open lecture by Norwegian specialist in the field of urban planning and technologies Gunnar Olav Furu. He is the head of a private consulting agency and has implemented a range of urban development projects in his home city of Sunndal. The lecture and an interactive workshop took place at ITMO University’s Institute of Design and Urban Studies with the support of the Consulate of Norway.

  • ITMO Master’s Students Win National Lighting Design Competition

    Second-year students of the Lighting Design Master’s program at ITMO University are named among the winners of Russia’s biggest lighting design competition. Winners received their awards during the international exhibition Interlight Moscow powered by Light + Building. Three projects by ITMO students were included in the top-10 list of interior lighting designs.

  • How to Make Cities More Livable: Norwegian Expert Knows the Answer

    There are many industrial cities in Russia, such as Norilsk, Monchegorsk, Magnitogorsk, and so on. Nowadays, more and more people leave them for bigger cities with better life prospects. Some 20 years ago, Norway faced the same problem, but they managed to solve it by means of smart urban planning and innovations. Gunnar Olav Furu has been involved in city planning for more than 30 years and now works as a municipal advisor in his home city Sunndal. Last week, Mr. Furu met with ITMO University students to talk about innovations and discuss how to make St. Petersburg more comfortable to live in.

  • IV International Spatial Development Forum: What You Need to Know about Building a Campus

    The fourth international spatial development forum was recently held in St. Petersburg at the “Manege” Central Exhibition Hall. The theme of this year’s forum was “iCities: New Codes - New Rules”. The forum’s organizers went from an impersonal discussion of buildings, technology and development programs to the essence of a human-oriented city, based on the principles of citizen engagement and sustainable development, and also the use of smart technologies. The future of Russia’s innovative campuses was also discussed at the forum.

  • SimCity IRL: How Citizens Help Urban Developers by Playing Board Games

    City dwellers often don’t have the chance to express their support or opposition to various urban development initiatives. And it’s not because there’s a lack of ways to do that, but that people may find it difficult to express their ideas. One way to solve this problem is to use a game-based approach, suggests Milena Ivkovic, an architect, game designer and head of Rotterdam-based company Blok74. She offers urban residents to play games as a way of showing the environment they’d like to inhabit in a simple, informal setting. Ms. Ivkovic explained her game-making process during a recent workshop at ITMO’s Institute of Design and Urban Science.

  • What It Means to Be an Architect in 21st Century

    The concept of public spaces is still somewhat underdeveloped in Russia, but it is already hard to imagine cities where projects such as the New Holland island renovation in St. Petersburg or the Wi-Fi enabled playgrounds in Kemerovo aren’t being implemented. Good public spaces are ones that the people love and keep coming back to. Urban studies are a new thing to Russia, but architects and planners are already adapting to new standards. Architect Daria Paramonova gave a talk as part of the Strelka Institute Week in St. Petersburg. Among the topics of discussion were: the role of architects in large-scale urban renovations and the intricacies of project planning – from historical research and pedestrian and transit route analysis to in-depth interviews with locals.
