Out of the total of 19,000 participants from all over Russia, only 140 experts proceeded to the finals of the competition. At the regional stage, Evgeny Smirnov presented a lecture series on optical and electronic microscopy, and in the finals – a lecture on the color blue: its unique properties, role in science and technology, and the inspiration it has provided to scientists and artists through the ages.
“This award is not just a great honor, but an important acknowledgement of the role of science and its popularization in society. To me, being a scientist is about continuously seeking knowledge and solving complex problems, while also growing and learning. This work not only advances scientific progress, but also benefits society,” shared Evgeny Smirnov.
Evgeny Smirnov is a leading researcher and professor at ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center. Before heading a group at ITMO, he spent over a decade working at laboratories in Switzerland, Germany, and China. Now he is working on materials based on gold nanoparticles and 2D materials, such as graphene and Mxene for next-gen sensors.

The awards were presented in Moscow by the Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov, the Advisor to the President Elena Yampolskaya, and the CEO of the Znanie Society Maxim Dreval. All winners received the honorary title of lecturer of the Znanie Society and 250,000 ruble grants to help develop their educational content.
