In just a handful of decades, LEDs have become an integral element of every type of electronics, from TVs to data transmission systems. Typically, these tiny-yet-powerful devices are triggered by electrical impulses; but now, a research team at ITMO’s Faculty of Physics has shown off its first-ever all-optical platform that employs lasers in that role. Such LEDs are able to turn on and off 100,000 times more quickly, making them uniquely suitable for ultrafast optical devices.

When researchers study the properties and behavior of particles inside accelerators, one of the things they pay close attention to is the “twist,” or the angular momentum exhibited by a particle within a beam of electrons or ions. To make assessment easier, scientists at ITMO decided to prove that twist can be monitored via triangular diffraction – put simply, allowing a beam to pass through a triangle-shaped aperture. This makes it possible to determine both the angle and direction of the twist. Having achieved positive results through experimental modeling, the research team will soon begin testing their new approach in practical conditions.
