From High School Graduation to Diploma: Expectations vs Reality
It is always challenging to find yourself and stand up for your ambitions. The last year of school is an enormously significant period when choices surround you all the time. Moreover, when it comes to picking a university, you have no other way but to rely on someone’s words because of your own lack of experience. There are many articles which can clearly illustrate students' lives and their opinions, but sometimes it is better to compare two subjects in order to get the desired result. That is why I conducted a survey and gathered information about the most crucial aspects of students' current life which they imagined differently.
1. Will and self-dependence are not crucial
To begin with, the most common misconception within the school community is that a university’s purpose is to take care of its students. Although it is a great point, you should not take it easy or too seriously. University definitely does not desire to drop you out, but just imagine how tough it is for lecturers to give equal proportions of knowledge to all students. More than two-thirds decided that there are excessively many materials which have to be learned on their own. In fact, it is quite a complicated question whether it is beneficial or not, because we all have diverse personalities and traits, and that is why the "will and self-dependence" point makes sense. After some time, studying new subjects by yourself is going to be in the state of nature due to reaching the limit of human knowledge. Moreover, each person has their own passion and pace, and it can be critical for some students to have continuous stress which can lead to crucial problems.
2. Groups are predetermined
To tell the truth, it is really demanding to make it to the end by yourself most of the time because of the amount of challenging and diverse subjects. This is where the experience of other people matters and assists you in the best way possible. Sharing your minds and thinking outside of the box adds extra strain, but allows you to avoid your knowledge gaps. Many people think that they should join certain groups as rapidly as possible. However, being afraid of being late is not a justified reason because to students, interaction is inevitable. In order to reach that goal, it is better to prove yourself and steadily communicate with others.
3. University professors set you at defiance
This point can depend on many different factors such as specialty, age, previous experience, and even first impressions. Nevertheless, you are both on the same side of the boat. Nine times out of ten, students are afraid to ask for assistance, and such situations have formed many misconceptions which made this paragraph one of the most disturbing aspects within students. In fact, it is just a relic of the past. Nowadays university professors are more oriented towards students and not only because they have to. It might even be much worse to have the dread of such communications as you do not demonstrate your attitude and involvement.
4. University will give me enough knowledge to write a diploma
There are two similar approaches to this question. First of all, it is significant to see a borderline between teaching and giving knowledge. Teaching is more about preparation and training your mind to be ready for some real tasks such as a diploma whereas giving knowledge is just about making you remember formulas the meaning of which you might not even understand. And the main answer is that the university gives you all crucial skills to do research and come to conclusions, but it will never (and should not) give you the answer or a hint. Moreover, it is not just about diploma but any type of work that requires patience and critical thinking.
5. My specialty is exactly what I expected
Many people can argue with that statement but it seems that a lot of students expected something different or even opposite from their current studying. Teachers, subjects, life as a whole can serve as an example of things people regret facing it. There are always some expectations and hopes which are meant to never happen and you have to put up with. As it has already been said, university gives you skills and improves your self-dependence and whole personality which is enough to make your expectations come true although it is your duty. There is a possibility to admit that your chosen way is completely wrong, which is always challenging to accept, but this does not mean that other roads are closed since your very first choice. Broadly speaking, being afraid of making incorrect decisions is absolutely fine, you just have to move forward to your expectations and keep them in your mind.
6. I can relax because I passed all my exams and entered the university
This way of thinking is entirely wrong. For most students, it means being free from everyone and parents in particular which is the most insidious trap you are able to fall into. In the worst case, this period can last up to several semesters and become a habit. However, self-dependence does not mean that you are free from responsibilities. From now on there is no reputation which can assist you in your "new life", and that is why it is called like that. Your relationships with teachers and other students depend on your skills and nothing else, which is why it is significant to prove yourself.
As a conclusion, fear is the most significant enemy which can even lead to some critical health problems. As the survey shows, an ideal student should be cold-blooded and estimate problems rationally. Do not procrastinate and sleep regularly; a balance between work and rest is the best key to being extremely effective and keeping your passion.
