An International Student’s Journey in St. Petersburg, Russia

When I first landed in St. Petersburg from India, brimming with excitement for my Russian Foundation Program, followed by Master's studies, little did I know that the journey ahead would be both challenging and transformative. It’s been more than one and a half-years now, and as I reflect on my experiences, I see a story of growth, resilience, and a lot of learning.

The initial struggle

Starting my Master’s program, which is taught entirely in the Russian language, was like being thrown into the deep end of a pool without knowing how to swim (here's the fun fact, I don’t know how to swim). My Russian language skills were still not at their best, and I found myself struggling with the basics of understanding lectures, participating in team activities, and keeping up with study materials. The initial months were exhausting. There were times I felt utterly lost and I questioned my decision to come here. The idea of returning home to the comfort of my family and friends seemed tempting.

However, I soon realized I wasn’t alone in this struggle. I met four other international students who were in the same boat. Sharing our experiences and challenges created a bond that helped me feel less isolated. We supported each other, both academically and emotionally, which was a tremendous help.

Making connections

One of the turning points in my journey was the time when I started making friends with Russian students, not from my study group though, but from different faculties and activities. These friendships became my lifelines. They patiently helped me with class assignments and homework, and explained concepts in simpler terms. These interactions not only improved my understanding but also boosted my confidence in speaking Russian (at least now I can understand some very local Russian jokes that are not taught in the classroom).

Support from professors

I was fortunate to find professors who were understanding and empathetic towards the cultural and language barriers I faced. Their support was invaluable. They offered additional guidance, allowed me time to understand and complete assignments, and encouraged me to keep pushing forward. Some professors even allowed me to submit assignments in English, as I wasn’t confident enough to do them in Russian. This understanding from faculty made a significant difference in my educational experience.

Building a study group

Another key aspect of my journey was forming a study group with other students. Working together on different subjects helped me grasp concepts more effectively. We shared resources, discussed lectures, and helped each other prepare for exams. This collaborative effort not only enhanced my academic performance but also created a sense of community and belonging.

Daily life and cultural experience

Living in St. Petersburg has been an adventure in itself. The city’s rich history and vibrant culture have added a unique flavor to my student life. I have attended several guest lectures in Russian, which, though challenging to follow initially, became more comprehensible over time. These lectures exposed me to diverse perspectives and enriched my learning experience.

Outside the classroom, I immersed myself in the local culture. Exploring the city’s museums, theaters, and historical sites, and trying out different Russian cuisines have been delightful experiences.

Reflecting on the journey

Looking back, my journey has been anything but smooth. The challenges were real, and there were moments of self-doubt and frustration. But these challenges also paved the way for personal growth and resilience. I have learned to adapt, persevere, and embrace the unfamiliar with an open mind.

To all new international students stepping into this journey, I would say, don’t get disheartened by the initial struggles. Seek help, build connections, and immerse yourself in the experience. Remember, you are not alone, and every challenge you overcome adds to your strength and capability. St. Petersburg has become a second home, and my time here, despite its ups and downs, has been incredibly rewarding. I look forward to the remaining part of my journey and the new experiences it will bring.

Stay curious, stay connected, and embrace every moment of this incredible journey.
