Though a little hazy on details, I recall the bittersweet yet exceptionally inspirational feeling – in the best traditions of GMH stories (yeah, I am that old) – after I saw the end credits of Pay It Forward (2000) back in the day. The movie is built around one idea, a tree of favors, according to which instead of returning a favor, you need to pass it on to three more people, thus spreading warmth and kindness into the world. Even with rose-colored glasses off, this simple concept, despite being a bit too naive, is a truly powerful thing when you get to think of it.

If you’re looking for some low-pressure motivation, Yes Man (2008) will definitely hit home. True to its title, this is a story about a man who, tired of his standstill life, starts saying yes to everything he’s asked or offered. By the way, this man is played by Jim Carrey, which only makes it more fun to watch. The movie sends a straightforward message that you should be open to new opportunities and simply live your life. Overall, this comedy was a great comfort for my ever-hesitating soul.

Ever since I first saw the film as a school kid, Whisper of the Heart (1995) has been one of my all-time favorites. Its magic is so complex (or maybe it’s become such an inseparable part of me) that I can’t really do it justice with words. It’s called a love story, but it is also a lesson on finding your true core and purpose, resiliently developing your talent, dreaming, and carving the gemstone inside you. Whenever I watch it, I feel as if I can see the world – and myself – a little more clearly and love it a little more.

Two movies that deeply motivate me are Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2005) and First Man (2018). The first one, a biographical film of the great Indian freedom fighter, serves as a beacon of courage and resilience. Netaji's unwavering determination and leadership skills inspire me to navigate life's challenges with bravery and perseverance. He teaches me to go against the flow and stay composed in adverse situations. On the other hand, First Man, the story of Neil Armstrong, instills in me the power of dreaming big and never losing hope. Neil's journey to the moon is a testament to human ambition, but what resonates with me most is his ability to balance his ambitious dreams with the importance of family and personal relationships.
