Sunscreen
Even though the city’s famous for its unpredictable, rain-prone summers, St. Pete’s sun is no less dangerous: a day in the sun here still results in sunburn. What’s the best way to avoid it? Of course, sunscreen! And if you’re planning to enjoy the famous “joke” fountains in Peterhof or happen to catch the rain after applying sunscreen, don’t forget to reapply it to stay protected.
Hat
Another sun protection measure to keep in mind (and in your bag) is a hat or a cap, preferably in a lighter color. Now you’re ready to walk in the sun all day without catching a sunstroke!
Raincoat or umbrella
Speaking of rain, the best practice is to take a raincoat or an umbrella with you, unless you’re absolutely sure it isn’t going to rain. This is a great thing to keep in mind if you are planning to attend a summer festival.
Insect spray
Two types of creatures to avoid this summer are mosquitoes and especially ticks. That’s why if you are planning a day exploring the city’s many suburbs and particularly eco-paths, don’t forget to have some insect spray handy. Additionally, for ecopaths, consider dressing in light-colored clothes, tucking your pants into your socks, wearing a hat, and opting for something with a close-fitting high collar (for ultimate tick protection).
Second layer
Unless we’re going through a heatwave, it’s quite likely that wearing the same clothes means you’ll be hot at 12 pm and freezing by 6 pm. That’s why everyone here’s so good at layering and it’s a great habit to pick up: just take a light second layer with you when you’re out and about. You never know when a sudden wind gust will catch you. Don’t forget this tip if you’re going on a boat tour!
Bandaid
For some, summer is notoriously known as blister season, which is why they always have a bandaid handy. We say it’s a good staple to keep in your bag even if you aren’t breaking into new sandals this season.
Reusable water bottle
Eco-friendly and reliable, a reusable water bottle can serve its function, be a fashion statement (such as one from ITMO Store), and save you quite a bit of money. You can refill your bottle at many coffee shops and eateries around the city, at ITMO coworking spaces, and some public places like the Vasileostrovsky Market.
