Herbarium exhibition
- September 4 - October 3, 12 pm - 7 pm daily, Mondays are days off
- DIDI Gallery
- free
If you are into graphics and contemporary art, then this exhibition is right up your alley: the works on display were created by Maxim Ima, a St. Petersburg-based street artist who has recently started collaborating with museums. Can street art find its place among the masterpieces of former generations that we’re used to seeing behind respectable museum doors? Or maybe it’s no use trying to make sense of something that came from the streets outside of its natural habitat? This exhibition is your chance to discover just that, as you explore Maxim Ima’s herbarium – a collection of flowers drawn in peculiar contexts in an attempt to ponder life and death.
Hydra new media exhibition
- September 11 - January 31, Tue-Fri 12 pm - 10 pm, Sat-Sun 11 am - 10 pm, Mondays are days off
- Sevkabel Port
- 600 rubles (tickets here)
If you’ve already visited the Grounding exhibition curated and designed by, among others, graduates of ITMO’s Art & Science Master’s program, you know that new media and art and science in particular is one of the most powerful ways to talk about environmental issues and the changes we inflict on the planet. By combining scientific and artistic approaches, artists can present data in the most striking form – in this exhibition, drawing our attention to the unnecessary boundary between humanity and nature. The separation of these two concepts doesn’t allow us to consider nature as a complete ecosystem that we, humans, are also part of. This time, in the works on display artists explore water or hydra and the environmental dangers associated with it.
Ayda, Pushkin! charity run
- September 19 - 25
- online
- 700 rubles
This weekend presents a great chance to contribute to your fitness and the well-being of those going through cancer treatment. A St. Petersburg-based charity foundation AdVita is hosting its annual Pushkin-themed charity run online for the first time this year. You can run anywhere – all you need to do is make a donation and track the distance you cover with any tracker so that you can upload the results on to the official website (in Russian). One other requirement is that you have to run in a historic costume, take a picture of yourself, and upload it together with your tracking data. Those with the best costumes will receive special prizes from the foundation. If you are in St. Petersburg, you can invite your friends to join in and run through the city center dressed as 18th century nobility – and for quite a noble cause!
Updates for cinemaholics: going to space
- September 25-26
- Cinemas in St. Petersburg
- 350 rubles (average ticket price)
First of all, if you haven’t seen it yet, this weekend is high time you did that – Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (2021) starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Oscar Isaac among others had its Russian premiere last week. Stunning even if you aren’t familiar with the original novel, this movie takes you to another galaxy, filled with plots and power plays, with Paul, a gifted young man (Chalamet), right at the center of it. The 2.5 hours will fly by and have you catching your breath on the edge of your seat. Yes, it is that good.
Continuing on the topic of travelling through space and complicated plotlines, Nolan’s legendary Interstellar (2014) came to the big screen once more. With this movie depicting technologies closer to those of our own, it demonstrates the peculiar and brutal truths of the way time works in our universe, as well as how much of a sacrifice “saving the world” really is.
Finally, if you can’t wait to get into that Halloween spirit, you can get your portion of chills at a screening of The Silence of the Lambs (1991), which seems to be an undying classic. Would you dare to follow Jodie Foster as she attempts to crack the case of a serial killer – and not fall into the hand of one?
The movies mentioned are all screened in English with Russian subtitles and you will find the specific shows and tickets by following the links in their titles above.
