What inspired you to pursue a PhD in biotechnology?
My passion for genetics, medicine, and microbiology has always driven me to explore how molecular mechanisms can help solve real medical challenges. A PhD felt like the natural next step.
Can you tell us a bit about your current research?
My research focuses on identifying molecular links that regulate the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells from different origins. In simpler terms, I’m studying how these cells turn into bone-forming cells. Understanding these mechanisms could make a real difference in regenerative medicine and lead to more effective therapy for bone-related diseases.
Why did you choose ITMO – and what’s it been like so far?
I chose ITMO for its advanced facilities, interdisciplinary focus, and international community. The experience has been both rewarding and challenging. I’ve grown academically and personally, learning to adapt to new systems and approaches to science.
Coming from Lebanon, how was the transition to studying and living in Russia?
It was definitely exciting, but also a bit overwhelming at first – a new culture, a new language, and a much colder climate! Over time, I found my rhythm. I’ve come to appreciate the diversity and the warmth of the people here, especially within the ITMO community.
What have you learned about yourself since moving here?
I’ve discovered that I’m much more adaptable and resilient than I thought. Living abroad pushes you out of your comfort zone – you learn independence, patience, and how to face challenges with a calm mind.
What’s one thing about your culture that you’ve shared with your labmates or classmates?
I’ve introduced my friends to some of Lebanon’s cultural treasures, such as Arabic poetry, traditional dishes, and of course, the Dabke dance. It’s always fun to see how people from other backgrounds connect with and enjoy it.
What’s one Russian habit or custom you’ve adopted?
Walking everywhere! I love how walking is such a normal part of daily life here. It’s relaxing, good for your health, and the best way to explore St. Petersburg’s beautiful streets.
What are you looking forward to in the next few years at ITMO?
I’m excited to continue developing my research and contribute meaningfully to my field. I also hope to build a strong professional network and keep growing as a scientist and innovator.
