Please introduce yourself to our readers.
As-salamu alaikum, everyone! I am Yesmin Lubna from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I am currently studying computer systems and technologies at ITMO University in St. Petersburg, Russia.
What inspired you to pursue your Bachelor’s degree at ITMO, and how did you first hear about it?
After completing my higher secondary school, I wanted to study computer science and was waiting for the right opportunity. I applied to many universities in different countries, but among all of them, I found my dream course at the best one – ITMO.
I first heard about ITMO’s great reputation in the world of competitive programming, especially its record-breaking wins at ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest). As someone deeply interested in computer science, it was like a dream destination. I wanted to study in an environment that pushes the boundaries of technology and is filled with some of the brightest minds in the field. The opportunity to get a world-class education in a culturally rich country like Russia was an irresistible combination.
What drew you to this field?
Since childhood, I've always loved building things, whether it was paper boats or Lego houses. The joy of creating was always a part of me. When I discovered computers, that joy found a new form. I realized that through code, I could build things from nothing! Solving a problem by writing a program felt like magic to me. My childhood obsession with building simply transformed into programming in the digital world. And it’s this joy of creation that drew me to programming.
Coming from Bangladesh, what was your first impression of St. Petersburg and life in Russia?
Actually, my first impression wasn’t very remarkable, but after adapting, I realized I chose the best city ever. Here, you can experience almost every kind of “climate” in the world, from hot weather to the aurora borealis! Every month brings a new season and a new atmosphere. Now I truly think St. Petersburg is the best city for me.
What were the biggest cultural differences or surprises you noticed when you first arrived?
As Bangladesh is a developing country, not everything is well organized there. But when I came here, I was really impressed to see how organized and systematic everything is in Russia.
How have you adapted to the new environment? Any challenges or fun stories to share?
Adapting to life here was quite easy because people live a better and more balanced life. The only problem for me is the food – it’s hard to find Bangladeshi-style dishes here! I still haven’t fully adapted to Russian food, and as a student, it’s not always easy to cook for myself.
Have you joined any clubs, events, or activities at ITMO that you’ve particularly enjoyed?
Yes! I’ve joined a few clubs, such as the ITMO Buddy System and the Speaking Club, and I try to take part in every cultural program at the university. It’s always fun to meet new people and experience different cultures through these events.
What’s your favorite spot on campus or around St. Petersburg to study, relax, or hang out with friends?
We usually do group work at our main campus on Kronverksky – there’s a lot of space for coworking and studying together. For hanging out, we love walking around the city center at night. St. Petersburg is magical after dark!
What have you learned about yourself since moving abroad for your studies?
The main thing I’ve learned is that I have found myself. I never thought I could live alone or manage everything by myself – but I’m doing it! It’s hard, but I’ve adapted to this new life and grown stronger because of it.
What are your goals after completing your Bachelor’s degree?
My main goal has always been learning – and that’s exactly what I’m doing now. I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll continue my studies or start my career after graduation, but I’ll follow wherever my learning journey leads me.
What advice would you give to other Bangladeshi students thinking about studying at ITMO?
If your goal is to learn, you’re welcome here! This is the best place for study if you want to learn and experience something new. ITMO will give you incredible opportunities to grow, both academically and personally.
