• Bar Talk: Young Scientists on Making a Career, Finding Your Place and Globalization of Science

  In the eyes of a layperson, the career of a scientist might seem an extraordinary, lifelong adventure. People foreign to the world of science have little understanding of the factors that influence a scientist’s path in their field. This week, young scientists from ITMO University and The Ioffe Institute gathered in a bar to discuss how the career of a scientist differs from that of other specialists, what is special about working in the Academy of Sciences, whether it is worth it to move to another country, and what is wrong with the current policies of encouraging women into science. ITMO.NEWS publishes the highlights of the discussion.

• ITMO Dean Sergei Kozlov Receives Auspicious Award

  Sergei Kozlov, Dean of ITMO’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies was officially awarded the honorary title "Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation". The title is awarded for significant contribution to the development of science, creation of new scientific schools and outstanding achievements in training young sciencists. The official ceremony for the award was held on December 15 in Smolny Palace, which is the seat of St. Petersburg’s administration. Professor Kozlov told ITMO.NEWS about his scientific interests, ideal team, criteria for successful research and development and new promising areas in photonics.

• Algorithm Summer School: New ITMO-STC Initiative

  From August 14 to 25, ITMO hosted the first Algorithm summer school on machine learning, organized in collaboration with the STC (Speech Technology Center) IT company.
