Partying for Sustainable Development: How Festivals are Going Green
Festivals all over the world regularly bring together thousands of people; few of them, however, are anywhere near as environmentally conscious as the Burning Man in Nevada, US, which leaves its desert venue even cleaner than it was before. Jürgen Forkel-Schubert, a senior expert on sustainable development at the Ministry for Urban Development and Environment of the City of Hamburg, explains how festivals can go green using Hamburg’s experience as an example.

Moscow Claims ICPC Champion Title for Second Year in a Row
On April 4, the final stage of the International Collegiate Programming Contest took place in Porto (Portugal). A team from Moscow has claimed the champion title of the world’s oldest and most prestigious programming contest. This year’s winners represented the Lomonosov Moscow State University, who won last year’s contest with the same line-up. In second place is the team from MIT. It was also announced that next year’s ICPC will take place at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).

ITMO University Makes a Debut in THE University Impact Rankings 2019
The Times Higher Education ranking agency has recently announced the results of its new rankings, THE University Impact Rankings. This initiative’s goal is to capture universities’ impact on society, based on the institutions’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. ITMO University made its debut in the rankings in two categories: “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”, and “Sustainable cities and communities”, making it to the global top-100 and top-200, respectively.

Council for the Development of Digital Economy at ITMO University: Online Education and Russian Universities in Global Top-50
On March 26, ITMO University hosted the third session of the Council for the Development of Digital Economy at the Federation Council of the Russian Federation. At the center of discussion was the topic “Human Capital as the General Asset of Digital Economy”. The event’s speakers and participants discussed the training and retraining of human resources in the framework of the Digital Economy national program. Particular attention was paid to the issue of regional involvement in the development of human capital for the digital economy, as well as providing Russian citizens with opportunities for lifelong study and avoiding the risks related to the automation of economy.

Classes to Resume at Building 4, Lomonosova St. 9 on April 2, 2019
Building 4 of ITMO University’s campus at Lomonosova St. 9 will resume operation starting on April 1, 2019. The building’s fire safety systems have been returned to active mode, and access to the building has been opened via a first-floor hallway. On Monday, April 1, the building will be open to ITMO University staff, with classes resuming on Tuesday, April 2.
