Entrepreneur Vaagn Ogannisian: Businesses Must Make Friends With Universities
Vaagn Ogannisian is a graduate of the St. Petersburg State University of Refrigeration and Food Processing Technologies (now – ITMO University’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems). Vaagn is a second-generation professional beer brewer. Ten years after his graduation, he still maintains a relationship with his alma mater by partnering up with ITMO for various events and inviting students to do internships at his company. ITMO Grad and AI Factory Co-Founder Greg Tkachenko: Startups Are the Cure for Burnout
Greg Tkachenko graduated with a Master's degree from ITMO University's Information Technologies and Programming Faculty in 2017, but he achieved his first professional successes while still a student. As a second-year student, Greg, along with a few other students of the Computer Technologies Department, was invited to take part in an internship at Yandex, where he spent almost two and a half years. Then, he received offers from Mail.ru Group and Facebook, which he turned down to work on the startup AI Factory, which he co-founded with Alexander Mashrabov and Victor Shaburov. In December 2019, the company was acquired by Snapchat’s parent company Snap for $166 million. Greg Tkachenko sat down for a chat with ITMO.NEWS and told us where to find ideas for your tech startup and how to deal with failure.

Interactive Games, Drones, and Thousands of Participants: ITMO.GO Celebration for First-Year Students in Review
On August 31, to mark the start of a new academic year, ITMO University hosted ITMO.GO, a large-scale celebration that brought together students, lecturers, staff, graduates, partners and friends of ITMO. During the event, over 4,000 first-year students of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs were officially welcomed into ITMO.FAMILY. At the celebration, they had an opportunity to learn more about the first days of their studies, take a fun photo with an A+ gradebook for luck, and also play chess, do some rowing or have a go at table hockey. Apart from that, the festivity marked the start of ITMO University’s 120th anniversary year celebrations, opened by Rector Vladimir Vasilyev.

ITMO University Held Russia’s First ICPC Alum Reunion
Last Saturday, ITMO University held Russia’s first reunion of alumni of the international student programming contest ICPC. The event brought together winners and participants of the previous ICPC rounds, as well as representatives of international IT companies, organizers of regional competitions, judges, coaches and volunteers that have helped with the organization of the contest over the years. The meeting was organized by the ICPC Foundation, which works to create an association of ICPC participants from all over the world, and supported by the company Huawei. Participating as an honorary guest was Bill Poucher, executive director of ICPC.

ITMO Alumni and ITMO Ambassadors: Staying in Touch After Graduation
Today, ITMO Alumni Association brings together not just the university’s graduates who live in Russia, but also its former international students. For one, ITMO’s alumni community in Bulgaria has over a hundred members, some of which still participate in ITMO’s scientific events. Many of the international students who are currently studying in St. Petersburg are becoming ITMO ambassadors ready to represent ITMO in their home countries. ITMO.NEWS talked to a few of them.

Head of Leningrad Laser Systems on Specifics of Russian Optical Components Market
Headed by ITMO graduate Nikita Burov, the Leningrad Laser Systems company has been selling components and equipment to enterprises, research centers and laboratories that work in the field of photonics and optics since 2016. In 2019, the company became resident of ITMO Technopark, and now makes use of the university’s scientific expertise for developing its produce. ITMO Graduate Anastasia Svarovskaya on Promoting Space Science
This year, Anastasia Svarovskaya graduated from Russia's first Master's program in science communication. During her studies, she visited the Baikonur Cosmodrome and the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Now, Anastasia conducts space-themed projects and writes for Russian and international magazines, as well as manages popular science communities in social networks. Vladimir Lumelsky On The Future Of Robotics: An Open Lecture At ITMO University
We all would have liked it if robots could do all the routine work, wash the dishes and do lots of other things we can't or don't have the time for - and it might seem that our dreams are about to become reality. Now, we already have robots like Da Vinci who can perform surgeries with better precision than any human would do, or the Roomba vacuum-cleaner robot who can get rid of dust in your apartment while you are taking a stroll. Yet, we still can't trust robots with everything - in fact, a robot still can't bring a glass of water to an aged person or fold washed clothes, notes Vladimir Lumelsky, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During an open lecture at ITMO University, he shared about what can help robots operate under the conditions of uncertainty and perform things humans easily do.
