Helping Sleepwalkers, Fighting Excessive Snow and Ensuring Better Security on Campus: Best Projects by 2019 “It’s Your Call!” Participants
“It’s Your Call!”, a winter school organized by ITMO University together with Sberbank, has just come to a close. Attending this year were 180 contestants of the five educational tracks (Programming and IT, Data- and Cybersecurity, Big Data, Robotics, and Photonics) of the national student competition “I am a Professional”. Over the course of five days, the students took part in project work to find a solution to topical social and infrastructural issues with the help of modern technologies. All project work topics went under the common banner of “campus life”. ITMO.NEWS reports on the projects that made it onto the winners’ podium.

Top Russian and European Firms Present Concept Designs for ITMO Highpark
On November 17, the first session of ITMO Highpark’s international expert council was held as part of the 7th St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. The discussion revolved around proposed architectural and planning solutions for ITMO University’s innovative new campus in the Yuzhny satellite city, in the Pushkinsky District of St. Petersburg. Design concepts were showcased by bureaus from the UK, the Netherlands, Austria and Russia. After reviewing the proposals, the international expert council is expected to pick one that will determine the future look of ITMO Highpark.

ITMO.Highpark Begins New Stage of Development
On September 4 the central headquarters of Interfax news agency in Moscow hosted a press conference dedicated to the beginning of implementation of the ITMO.Highpark innovations center. Konstantin Noskov, the Russian Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, announced the start of a new stage of this project’s development.

IV International Spatial Development Forum: What You Need to Know about Building a Campus
The fourth international spatial development forum was recently held in St. Petersburg at the “Manege” Central Exhibition Hall. The theme of this year’s forum was “iCities: New Codes - New Rules”. The forum’s organizers went from an impersonal discussion of buildings, technology and development programs to the essence of a human-oriented city, based on the principles of citizen engagement and sustainable development, and also the use of smart technologies. The future of Russia’s innovative campuses was also discussed at the forum.

St. Petersburg Governor Poltavchenko Elected as ITMO Highpark Chairman of Board
The decision was made during the first session of ITMO Highpark’s Board of Directors. Highpark is a new scientific, educational and innovative center in the south of St. Petersburg. The meeting itself was held on December 20 at ITMO University. Also present at the session was Nikolay Nikiforov, the Russian Minister of Communications and Mass Media. Mr. Nikiforov noted that this project will take the form of a complete ecosystem aimed at supporting research, innovative projects and the quality of life for young specialists.

Campus Festival: How to Learn About Science at a Bar
How to discover a platinum field, why scientists can’t replicate more than half of their experiments and what is hidden behind the petroglyphs of North Europe and the treasures of the Hermitage? Last Friday, seven bars of St. Petersburg turned into an educational space for just one night. All in all, 12 lectures were given throughout the city. Vladimir Borisov, postgraduate student at ITMO University’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies, explained the construction of a laser and the concepts of holographic memory and supercontinuum, while Varvara Lymar, research fellow at ITMO University’s Institute of Design and Urban Studies, gave her thoughts on what could be done with St. Petersburg’s industrial areas. ITMO.NEWS paid a visit to the young scientists’ lectures and found out what a scientific gathering at a bar looks like and why this format is becoming ever more popular.
