  • ITMO-VK Competition Winners Receive Prizes and Bonus Exam Points

    The past Sunday, April 7, ITMO University hosted the finale of the ITMO-VK competition held by the popular social network VK. More than 5,000 school students from 60 regions of Russia and the neighboring countries took part in the competition from the comfort of their home. On April 5-7, the 351 participants who passed into the final round came to St. Petersburg to compete for the main prize: 10 bonus Unified State Exam points to be used during admission to ITMO University, as well as MacBooks supplied by St. Petersburg City Administration, tickets to this summer’s VK Fest, and other gifts from ITMO University.

  • VK Hackathon 2018 Winners Make Donating Blood Easier

    ‘Working title’, a team made up of ITMO University and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University’s graduates, won Grand Prix at the 2018 VK Hackathon. They developed an application VK Donors, which was commissioned by DonorSearch. The app is aimed at increasing awareness about blood donation, encouraging people to donate blood and building communication between donors and blood donation centers. In the application, you can write about what exactly you want to donate (whole blood, plasma or other blood components) and in what city, read about the procedure and get some other useful information (for example, about blood donation centers in your city that need your donation most of all). In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, the winners explained about how this app will help promote blood donation in Russia.

  • ITMO Student Wins VK Cup-2018

    ITMO University student Mikhail Putilin took first place in the 5th VK Cup International Programming Championship. Mikhail was in a team with St. Petersburg State University’s student Alexander Logunov. The competition started in March, while the final round was held on August 11-12 in the VK headquarters, where 20 teams from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus competed for a prize of 2,500,000 RUB.

  • St. Petersburg Hosts 4th VK Fest

    This Sunday marked the second and final day of VK Fest in St. Petersburg, attended by tens of thousands of users of Russia’s biggest social network. Interestingly, this was the first time that VK had its own large zone at the event. Developers, admins and designers explained how to get a job at VK, how it works and how the 140 members of the support service manage to answer millions of questions.   • VK’s Head of Growth and Research On Delegating Routine Tasks to AI

    Last Sunday ITMO University announced the results of the ITMO VK Olympiad. This year, more than 3,000 school students from 70 regions of Russia and CIS took part in the competition that tested their knowledge in 6 disciplines. The finalists got to attend an open lecture on data analysis and machine learning technologies by Andrei Zakonov, the head of growth and research at VK and a graduate of ITMO University. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, he revealed how machine learning is changing Russia’s biggest social network, how school students can get started in that field and what kind of skills VK looks for in its employees.

  • App by ITMO Students will Filter Media Events and Predict their Popularity

    How does one make local news go public, help communities manage the incoming news flow, and offer users a chance to make money off content? Last year at the Vkontakte hackathon, ITMO students Victor Khovansky and Evgeny Varlamov developed an app that can not just categorize media events by topics and categories, but also predict which posts will get the most likes and reposts. The team won the hackathon, and the administration of the Lentach community asked them to continue further developing their project. This February, the application was made available to the public on the Vkontakte social network,  and tested by Lentach community subscribers. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Victor Khovansky talked about their project and its prospects.

  • VK Hackathon Winners: Using New Tech to Run Online Communities

    The third Hackathon of the largest Russian social network VK was held in St. Petersburg on October 20 to 22. Compared with the events of previous years, this hackathon has become larger: the number of participants exceeded 300, winners could choose from five different areas of software development and the prize fund became one million rubles. The winners were given only 40 hours to develop their application. The winners of the category "Media" - Master’s degree students at ITMO’s Computer Technology Department Victor Khovansky and Evgeniy Varlamov (Team Traffox) - spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their software Neon and how it helps community managers monitor incoming content.
