ITMO University in Top Group of Project 5-100 Participants
The Council on Global Competitiveness Enhancement of Russian Universities among Global Leading Research and Education Centers (Project 5-100) has just unveiled the results of its latest session, which took place on October 26-27 in the Russian city of Kaliningrad. In its report to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Council recommended that the Ministry continue providing the 21 higher education institutions participating in the Project 5-100 with financial support. Based on their performance, the participants were divided into three groups with seven universities each. ITMO University made it to top-seven.

VR and the Future of Digital Art: The Fourth International Animation Assembly in St. Petersburg
In late October, the St. Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design hosted the Fourth International Animation Assembly. One of this year’s main topics of roundtable discussions, lectures and workshops was the use of digital technologies. ITMO University showcased virtual reality tech in a special demo area at the event. ITMO.NEWS learned how students create thesis projects at the intersection of art and science, and put down the highlights from a lecture by digital artist Rinat Khabirov.

What You Need to Know About Breast Cancer: Oncologist Explains
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world. Over the last years, this disease has become the most frequent cancer among Russian women. According to the statistics, 21 women out of 100 cancer patients have breast cancer. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is an annual international health campaign organized by breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and educate people about the importance of early screenings. Founded more than 20 years ago, NBCAM now brings together hundreds of organizations from all around the world. In this interview, Vasiliy Filimonenko, an oncologist at the Scandinavia clinic in St. Petersburg, expanded on what everyone should know about this disease, how to conduct screenings, and what are the common myths about cancer.

ITMO University Up by Ten Positions in QS EECA University Rankings
According to the results of the QS EECA University Rankings 2018/19, ITMO University moved up by ten positions compared to its last year’s performance and was ranked 56th among the top-300 universities. Every year, hundreds of higher education institutions from 30 developing European and Central Asian countries compete for the top spots in the ranking. This time, 12 Russian universities made it to the top-50.
