Different Challenges, Different Teachers: Tatiana Chernigovskaya on Challenges of Digital Age
Today’s computers allow us to conduct the most complex genomic research, and specialized software has long bested humans at chess and Go. Still, though we’ve lost to machines in terms of processing speed, our brain still exceeds the most powerful computers in terms of complexity. But do we really know how it works? And how can we apply this knowledge in the conditions of the ever-changing environment? Tatiana Chernigovskaya, Head of St. Petersburg State University’s Department of the Problems of Convergence in Natural Sciences and Humanities, talked about the new challenges in cognitive science during an open lecture at ITMO University.

ITMO is LOVE
When we first introduced it as one of our core values, many were shocked. But the truth is for most of us ITMO University is more than a job – it’s a deep commitment, it’s fun, it’s family. It’s the knowledge that what we do together is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s late nights and early flights. It’s thinking big and investing even bigger. It’s completely changing education and science in Russia, and putting a heart on it.

Researchers From ITMO Create First-Ever Light-Emitting Nanoantennas
Young scientists from ITMO University have developed a new type of nanoscale light sources based on halide perovskites. The nanosources are subwavelength nanoparticles which serve both as emitters and nanoantennas capable of amplifying light emission inherently without need for additional devices. Moreover, perovskites enable tuning of emission spectrum throughout a visible range by varying the composition of the material. This makes the new nanoparticles a promising platform for creating compact optoelectronic devices such as optical chips, light-emitting diodes, or sensors. The results were published in Nano Letters, one of the leading journals on nanophotonics.
