  • WorldSkills: How World-Class Specialists are Trained in Russia

At the international skill competition WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017, Russia’s select team has placed first according to its total score with 11 medals and 21 medallions of excellence. Vadim Polyakov, who trained for two years at ITMO’s Center of Competencies, won the gold medal in the category “Refrigeration and Air Conditioning”. Over the years of its operation, the Center has prepared numerous champions of skills competitions – even though only five years ago very few people in Russia knew what the WorldSkills standards are and what skills every modern professional has to possess. Andrey Pivinskiy, member of the WorldSkills Russia expert council, explains how Russia has learned to train champions in just a few years and why WorldSkills is important for universities and the industry.

  • COMSOL DAY: Tractor Beams, Optical Traps and Nanoparticle Manipulation

At the COMSOL Day in Moscow, head of ITMO’s International Research Laboratory of Nano-Opto-Mechanics Alexander Shalin gave a talk on the new algorithms for multiphysics modeling and optical power calculations using COMSOL Multiphysics software. He demonstrated how the program can be used to model the excitement of unidirectional surface plasmon-polaritons and their optomechanical effect on nano-objects on metal surfaces. Shalin’s team uses these methods to acquire fundamental results in optomechanics and improve the qualities of such technologies as tractor beams, optical trapping, positioning of nanoparticles and other.

  • Chemist Artem Oganov: On Blind Spots in Chemistry and Materials of Future

Today Artem Oganov is rightly considered one of the most famous Russian scientists of the new generation. Oganov is a theoretical crystallographer and the creator of a number of new materials – as well as methods of discovering them. A few years ago he solved the problem of predicting the crystal structure of a substance based on its chemical composition. This problem was for long considered to be unsolvable. Oganov created software capable of predicting stable chemical compounds based on a set of initial elements. His discoveries are so impressive that many consider him one of the likely candidates for the Nobel Prize in the next few years. Having worked abroad for 17 years - in England, Switzerland and the United States - at 37 he decided to return to Russia, where he became a professor of Skoltech and headed the Laboratory of Computer Design of Materials at MIPT. During an open lecture at ITMO University, Oganov spoke about his career abroad, his return home, materials of the future and creation of an evolutionary mechanism for predicting substance structures, which proves that even in well-known areas of chemistry there are still many "blind spots". Main points of the event - in this article by ITMO.NEWS.

  • Seldon the Robot's Rise to Fame

Seldon the Robot, whose masterful rendition of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" has captivated the audiences of multiple robotics competitions, has spent a day in a new role - that of a civil servant. Dressed in a white shirt, a jacket and tie, he went to a meeting with the Governor of Leningrad Oblast Alexander Drozdenko and Chairman of the Regional Parliament, Sergey Bebenin. On 20 October, Seldon changed the tune - instead of hit songs, he vocalized the outline for the Oblast's 2018 budget. The robot, which was built by school students at ITMO’s Robotics Center was all over the news this week and became a star on the “Evening Urgant” late-night show. The fame hasn’t gotten to its head, as Igor Lositsky, the project’s supervisor noted.

  • ITMO University Proposes New Approach To Storing Big Data

The term Big Data was first introduced by Clifford Lynch, Nature's editor, in 2008's special issue dedicated to the worldwide explosive growth of the quantity of information. Both then and now, science remains amongst the fields that produce most of the information; for instance, every year the Large Hadron Collider produces more than 15 petabytes of information, and NASA's servers host more than 37 petabytes on climate change only. And Big Data continues to grow - as of now, it has more and more applications in other fields, from marketing to urban science. Scientists from all over the world work on the mechanisms that will help increase the speed of data processing, as well as decrease their storage volume. ITMO scientists believe that a new way of organizing data storages can help solve these issues; lately, they've presented their new Exarch project. The new approach can double the speed of data processing, as well as allow to withdraw from using additional processing capacities. The research results were presented at the recent ICCBDC (International Conference on Cloud and Big Data Computing) 2017 in London.
