TADHack 2017: ITMO Students Finish Third with Tourism App
Students from ITMO University’s Computer Technologies Department have won third place at the St. Petersburg event of the Telecom Application Development Hackathon (TADHack), which was held in more than 30 cities around the world from September 22 to 24. Urbanist Dhiru Thadani: to Improve Cities, We Must Focus on People
According to UN estimates, by 2050 the population of Earth will reach nine billion people. The rapid growth of urban population, climate change, depletion of fossil fuels, healthcare crises – these are just a few of the global issues that experts are trying to tackle. In the search for sustainable means of subsistence, city planning is becoming a bigger priority. But what should modern cities look like and how can ubranists prepare for the rapid changes in the environment? These are some of the issues that Dhiru Thadani, architect, urbanist and VP-Members of the International Society of City and Regional Planners, is working with. Recently, Mr. Thadani gave an open lecture at ITMO’s Institute of Design and Urban Studies. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, Dhiru Thadani speaks about the similarities between St. Petersburg’s “grey belt” and USA’s brownfields, how new global challenges will affect the teaching process and what issues need to be prepared for even now.

Urban Evolution: Artists, Journalists and CEOs Discuss Future of St. Petersburg

New Nanoobject Construction Method Opens Road to Complex Optics
ITMO University scientists have developed a new approach to nanoobject construction, one that provides the opportunity to study and predict how deformations and defects in the crystal lattice affect the optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals. This model allows them to calculate both the linear and non-linear optical properties of various nanoobjects such as: nanorolls, nanorods, nanoplates and others. The method can be used to create optical materials and devices with new functionalities with uses in drug delivery, chiral exciton-based devices and chiral catalysis devices, and areas such as biosensing and spintronics. Results of this research were published in Nano Letters and used in the writing of other articles in ACS Nano.

Spatial Development Forum: How Citizens Create Smart Cities
According to IESE’s Cities in Motion Index, St. Petersburg is rated 103rd among the world’s “smartest” cities. The city’s Governor believes that the city has potential to be among the top 50. How can that goal be achieved, however? Through the integration of information technologies in the city’s management systems. It is also important that the citizens take on a more active role in the city’s life. At the III International Spatial Development Forum (ISDF), a plenary discussion on the future of “smart” urban technologies was held. This year, the forum’s main theme is “Re.Urban – Re.Evolution — rethinking of cities’ essence and evolutional ways of their development”. The event is co-organized by ITMO University and the Government of St. Petersburg.

ITMO won Silver "Dolphin" at the Cannes Corporate Media and TV awards
Last night in one of the cinema capitals of the world, in Cannes, the annual International festival Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards was held. For each of the last seven years filmmakers, agencies, television channels and even students have been vying for a prize in corporate and documentary films along Côte d'Azur. This year, ITMO University participated in the event for the first time, winning the silver “dolphin” in the “Marketing Communication - B2C” category.

ITMO's Metamaterial MRI-Boosting Invention Praised by St. Petersburg Government
A project by scientists from ITMO’s Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials that aims to improve the speed and quality of MRI scanning has won the first place in a competition for innovative projects in science and higher education. The competition was organized by the administration of St. Petersburg. Winners were announced at the St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum (SPIIF). The scientists’ invention shortens the time needed to perform an MRI scan by half and makes it cheaper.

Japanese Exchange Students Share Impressions of Russia
ITMO University was visited by 18 students from 10 Japanese universities as part of a Japanese-Russian youth exchange program. The program was initiated by Junior Chamber International Japan, which also invited ITMO University to participate in the program for the 8th time. Earlier, a group of 18 Russian students, including students from ITMO University, had gone on a similar trip to Japan. During their visit to Russia, the guests from the Land of the Rising Sun were given a tour of ITMO University and went sightseeing in St. Petersburg. They also spent five days in Moscow where they learned about the Russian higher education system. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, they shared their impressions from their first-ever visit to Russia.

4C St. Petersburg: Soon, Everyone Will Be a Gamer
Every day, more and more people are becoming involved in games. Even non-interactive gaming video content attracts more viewers than HBO or Netflix. Games are no longer something enjoyed only by a limited group of computer enthusiasts; even if you never played Dota 2 or CS:GO, you become a part of the global gaming industry when you play your favorite smartphone app on the commute. Christopher Cataldi, co-founder and COO of Genvid Technologies, believes that gaming will continue to attract new users, taking over the audiences of other popular forms of entertainment. Global trends in game development were discussed by developers, owners and top-managers of companies at Wargaming’s conference 4C: St. Petersburg.
