  • ITMO's MT.Lab Develops A New Kit for Studying Robotics

    Specialists from ITMO University's MT.Lab created a new educational kit for studying robotics - the MT.Evolute. The system is compatible with most popular robotics instruments and allows school and university students to construct their devices as fast as possible without getting lost in the many different standards. The project's author, ITMO's Master's student Alexey Meshkov, presented it at the Skolkovo Robotics exhibition. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, he and Dmitry Kupriyanov, MT.Lab's founder and PhD student at ITMO’s Department of Mechatronics , shared about their invention.

  • Trapping Light: Anisotropic Structures Can Increase Optical Device's Efficiency

    ITMO's scientists Yuri Kivshar and Mikhail Rybin published an article in the News&Views section of the Nature Photonics journal on the research of their colleagues from Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology. The article explains how the Spanish researchers succeeded in using the anisotropic properties of a compound for creating simpler yet more effective optical devices based on the so-called bound states in continuous spectrum. In future, this discovery can be applied in optical detection systems and other devices, shared Mikhail Rybin, Deputy Head of ITMO's Department of Dielectric and Semiconductor Photonics and senior research officer of the Spectroscopy of Solids Laboratory of the Ioffe Institute.

  • Research Associates Migraine with Hypertension

    St. Petersburg's scientists learned that that though arterial hypertension and migraines manifest themselves differently, they may have a similar origin. The researchers discovered that patients who have migraines have twice more relatives with cardiovascular problems than healthy people.  Yet, patients with migraines and normal blood pressure and patients with migraines and hypertension react to autonomic regulation of circulation tests differently.  According to the scientists, by studying the links between these diseases, one will be able to better understand mechanisms of their development and causes of frequent cardiovascular complications in migraine patients. The article was published in the Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and Clinical.
