  • R&D Projects Competition Winners On Their Creations and University Support

    In late March, the results of ITMO’s practice-oriented R&D projects competition were announced. A total of 25 participants presented their ideas with only 10 getting grants from the University. These grants don’t only include financial support, but also help with project paperwork, and team work management. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the heads of the winning teams to ask them why their projects are special and how they are planning to use the grants.

  • ITMO PhD Student Dmitry Zhirihin Receives Prestigious IEEE Graduate Fellowship

    Dmitry Zhirihin, a PhD student at ITMO University has received the Graduate Fellowship of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. This prestigious award is annually granted to only 12 young scientists working in the field of microwave physics. The committee evaluated Dmitry’s research of topological insulators, deciding to fund his further work. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Dmitry to learn about the work of a contemporary experimental scientist, the experiences of spending the Christmas holidays in the lab and the damage an unlocked door can do to the results of an experiment.

  • ITMO University PhD Student Awarded Ostrogradski Scholarship

    Tatyana Latynina, a PhD student at ITMO University’s Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, made it to the list of awardees of the Ostrogradski Program’s Scholarship. Held annually, the program aims at helping young scientists from Russia visit research laboratories in France to conduct joint research projects together with their French colleagues. This fall, Tatyana will spend a month and a half at the University of Rouen, where she will study advanced electrical aluminum alloys. Such materials are now being studied intensively by various research groups all over the world. Research in this field opens up new opportunities for controlling the materials’ properties, such as their strength, heat resistance, and electrical conductivity.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids of Plant Origin and Biomedical Tasks: ITMO Scientists’ Research at University of Lorraine

    This fall, PhD student Daria Kuznetsova and Master’s student Mariam Muradova from the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering, who are also members of the “Biotechnologies of the Third Millennium” international research center, will go to the University of Lorraine to conduct research in the field of life sciences. For Daria, this will be her second trip to France, where she’ll continue to work on her research thesis. Mariam spent last year’s spring semester at the University of Verona, Italy, and this year, she will continue her research in the field of plant biotechnology.   • Dire Straits and Silver Linings: a Syrian Student's Journey to ITMO

    Hopes crushed, a beautiful ancient city burned to the ground, and yet one man’s dream of an education rises above it all. Youssef is from the city of Aleppo in Syria. His love of languages and desire for an education led him from speaking Arabic and English to French and Russian.   • ITMO Student on Using IT to Help People With Dementia

    How can we help people with dementia communicate with their family members, memorize things, and live a normal life? A Horizon 2020 program that brings together scientists, psychologists and medical specialists from Great Britain, Germany, and Spain aims to solve this problem. Daniil Razdyakonov, a  PhD student at ITMO University and member of its Technopark’s resident, the VISmart company, is also participating in this project. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about how programmers help medical specialists and psychologists solve social problems.

  • Young Scientists From ITMO University Win IEEE Photonics Society Awards

    The IEEE Photonics Society has announced the results of its annual Graduate Student Fellowship Award, and for the first time ever two ITMO University scientists made the list. Among the 2018 recipients of this prestigious prize commemorating high-achieving PhD students for their research are Tel Aviv University PhD student Dmitry Filonov and ITMO University PhD student Alena Schelokova, both Associates of the ITMO International Research and Educational Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials.

  • ITMO Student Joins Research at XFEL

    When the European X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) was inaugurated on September 1, a whole range of opportunities became available to the world's scientists - opportunities they could only dream of before. Soon, the new facility will contribute to new advances that seemed impossible due to the lack of equipment this powerful. Dmitrii Potorochin, a PhD student at ITMO University, will become the first to go study at a joint educational program by ITMO University and Freiberg University of Mining and Technology to work on new projects for XFEL.
