  • 2019 Light Nights in Gatchina: Projects by ITMO Participants

    On August 16-17, 2019, the annual international festival of light art “Light Nights in Gatchina” took place at the Gatchina Palace and Estate Museum. Each year, the festival brings together students of Russian and international universities, artists, designers, multimedia professionals and creative collectives and design studios from Russia, Europe and beyond. 2019 has been the third year that the students of ITMO University’s Master’s program “Lighting Design” participate in the official selection of the international festival. This year, it was ITMO’s students Lyubov Angelova, Mikhail Andreev, and graduate Valeria Molodovskaya that took part in the event’s art residency.

  • First Summer School of International Project LIGHT4HEALTH

    From July 29 to August 2, 2019, the first summer school of the international project LIGHT4HEALTH will be held as part of the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership program. The project’s consortium includes ITMO University (Russia), Thomas Jefferson University (the US), University of Wolverhampton (the UK), and three leading European schools in the field of light design: Aalborg University (Denmark), Hochschule Wismar (Germany) and KTH Royal Institute (Sweden). In line with the overall focus of LIGHT4HEALTH, the first summer school will be dedicated to harnessing the power of light to bring about a positive impact on human health.

  • Light in the City: How Light Affects Our Mood and Emotions

    May 16 is celebrated globally as the International Day of Light. Established by UNESCO, it is a global initiative that provides a platform for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture, and art. To commemorate this day, Mikhail Ivanov, a lighting designer and chief expert on urban lighting projects at the Strelka design bureau, gave an open lecture at the State Russian Museum’s Multimedia Center about the key factors one needs to consider when developing good urban lighting solutions.

  • ITMO Master’s Students Win National Lighting Design Competition

    Second-year students of the Lighting Design Master’s program at ITMO University are named among the winners of Russia’s biggest lighting design competition. Winners received their awards during the international exhibition Interlight Moscow powered by Light + Building. Three projects by ITMO students were included in the top-10 list of interior lighting designs.

  • Schrödinger’s Paradox and Doctor Faustus’ Lab: the Many Faces of “Gatchina Light Nights”

    This weekend, Gatchina hosted “Gatchina Light Nights ”, the 5th international festival of light art. Annually attended by thousands of people, this year’s event was even more special as for the first time ever, it lasted not one day, but two. Audiences were presented with more than 30 unique light art objects made by Russian and international artists, architects, as well as lighting and stage designers. Keeping to the tradition, an international competition of light installations was held as part of the festival. It featured two light installations created by students of ITMO University’s Department of Creative Lighting Design.

  • Interning in New York, Working in Berlin: ITMO Graduate Victoria Gorelkina On Her International Experience

    Victoria Gorelkina graduated from ITMO University in 2015. After going on an exchange semester in Switzerland as part of her Master’s studies, Victoria decided that she would like to continue her education abroad, consequently enrolling in a Master’s program in Germany.     On August 10-11, Gatchina will host the Lightnights international festival of light art. 37 art objects designed by artists from Russia, Belarus, Germany, Italy, and Finland will be presented at the festival. Master’s students from ITMO’s Department of Creative Lighting Design will also take part in the event.
