  • Genetic Testing: What Human Genome Tells Us About Ourselves

It has been 15 years since the conclusion of the Human Genome Project, one of the 20th century’s major research projects. One of its consequences was the public availability of genomics methods. Today, anyone can take a genetic test to learn about their ancestry. We spoke to bioinformatics experts from ITMO University’s Computer Technologies Laboratory to learn how genetic testing works, its scientific significance, which methods are trustworthy, and which ones aren’t.

  • Robot’s DNA, Biofuel Cells and Holographic Protection: SCAMT Workshop Week at ITMO

ITMO University has recently hosted SCAMT Workshop Week, an interdisciplinary workshop aimed at helping students acquire in-depth knowledge and practical skills in chemistry and biology, as well as work on their own project in the field of modern nanotechnologies. This year, a total of ten projects were presented at the workshop. Among the highlights are a nano-pharmaceutical drug, a holographic  protection  system, and a robot’s DNA. Organized at ITMO for the second time, the event brought together 55 Bachelor’s and Master’s students from 18 regions of Russia, as well as Ukraine and Belarus.

  • ITMO Researchers Develop Fast and Simple Perovskite Nanolaser Creation Method

Using the new method, scientists can synthesize perovskite nanolasers, which combine an optically active medium with a Fabry–Pérot high-Q resonator, in just five minutes. The nanolasers’ simple synthesis process and their unique optical qualities make them highly promising sources of coherent radiation in the development of high-sensitivity optical sensors and ultra-fast data transfer in photonic integrated circuits. Results of this research have been published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

  • Analyzing Metagenome Helps Understand the Role of Bacterial Species in Crohn’s Disease

Research on gut metagenome of patients with Crohn’s disease helped study how it influences the functional composition of gut microbiota. Among the most common changes are the decrease in the diversity of useful microbes and the increase in the amount of Escherichia coli and other microbes associated with inflammation. Such data can help better understand the causes and progress of the disease, as well as choose efficient treatment. The research was published in BMC Genomics.

  • Nanophotonics' Most Topical Fields: Research on Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Structures

Hybrid metal-dielectric structures hold great promise for the development of new data recording devices, improved sensors and optical chips. This is the field that Yali Sun, a PhD student from ITMO's Faculty of Physics and Engineering, focuses on. Back in China, she obtained education in the field of electronics, and then chose to focus on nanophotonics. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, she spoke about the differences between education in Russia and China, gender issues, and working in this new relevant field.

  • Scientists Propose a Fully Optical Method for Near-Field Reshaping and Enhancement in Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Oligomers

Scientists from ITMO University in collaboration with researchers from Saint Petersburg Academic University have developed a fully optical method that allows to reconfigure the properties of hybrid metal-dielectric oligomers in the near field. This offers a simpler and cheaper alternative to the existing methods of working with such structures. The use of metal-dielectric oligomers has a lot of potential for developing new data recording devices, as well as in sensor science. The research was published in Laser & Photonics Reviews.
