  • ITMO and University of Bologna Cooperate in Science and Education

    How is recycling organized in Italy, what is transition engineering all about, and how can its principles be applied to the operation of Russian companies in order to form a really effective recycling management system? Anastasia Pavlova, senior lecturer at the Department of Industrial Ecology and Safety, is working on a project that manages raw materials and wastes from the food industry, which answers these questions. She recently won an Italian government grant and has gone to the University of Bologna - the country's second largest university and the oldest educational establishment in Europe. In the course of her internship, not only does Anastasia plan to study Italian practices, but also enhance cooperation with Italian universities.

  • ITMO U Takes Second Place in Digital Internationalization

    While QS-Apple creative awards acknowledged ITMO University with a Bronze prize for the Best International Website page back in 2016, here in Russia, the internationalization efforts of the university on the web are receiving focus from the Russian International Affairs Council who placed ITMO second in terms of digital internationalization.

  • ITMO U ROCKYed in Philadelphia at NAFSA’18

    Philadelphia is the city where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and signed. It’s also the place where “Rocky” movie was shot. More importantly, it’s the place, where NAFSA 2018 was hosted. NAFSA is the most comprehensive international education Conference & Expo serving the diverse needs of the international education community. As with last year, ITMO University took part under the umbrella of “5-100” Academic Excellence Project along with 15 other Russian universities.

  • Diving into Internationalization: ITMO’s English Upgrade

    The word “robot” was first introduced to the English language in 1921 by the Czech playwright Karel Čapek. His play, Rossum’s Universal Robots (RUR), explored the dark reality of humanity’s future if we build robots to do our bidding. Last Friday’s performance of RUR by ITMO students is one of the many projects and developments advanced by the Foreign Language Training Center, established just over three and half years ago.

  • Nowruz: The Start of Spring

    Every year, some time around March 21st, the sun shines on the whole planet equally. On this day, when the sun rises on the North Pole for the first time, people from many countries in the northern hemisphere celebrate this day as the beginning of a new year and the start of spring! We talked to some of our international students and staff here at ITMO to learn more about how this event is celebrated in their home countries and what it means to them.

  • ITMO PhD Student on Doing Medical Modeling at University of Sheffield

    Can computer modeling help us solve problems of people suffering from cardiovascular diseases? Scientists from ITMO University in collaboration with colleagues from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have been conducting research over the last few years to reduce the risk of complications after coronary stenting. These stents are special dilating frames that are placed in the coronary vessels and are designed to restore blood supply to the heart. Pavel Zun - a PhD student at ITMO University’s The High-Performance Computing Department and one of the project’s authors - spent the last month at the University of Sheffield, where he worked with biologists on a model for tissue growth inside the vessel after the stent is installed. He shared some details about the research with ITMO.NEWS and explained why design of computer models for medicine is one of today’s most promising areas of work.

  • Exchange Students from Brazil: 'They're Always Happy'

    Students from around the world have come to participate in the IT and Innovation Business in Russia exchange semester at ITMO. Among them is a bright and bubbly group from Brazil. Every year a group of four or five students come from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) in Vittoria, on the east coast of Brazil, to join our exchange semester. Last year we talked to Esthevão who shared about what brought him to Russia. This year we talk with Angelo, Thales, Caio, Mateus and Yan who have been here for five weeks now, about their experience so far.

  • ITMO University Climbs 100 Positions in QS Computer Science & Information Systems Subject Ranking

    QS has revealed today its 2018 World University Rankings by Subject. This year, one of the most influential rankings in the world reviewed the performance of over 1,000 universities from 151 countries. QS researchers ranked the universities in 48 subjects and five general subject areas. ITMO University is now present in three subject rankings and, for the first time ever, is included in the Engineering & Technology subject area. ITMO’s highest position is in the Computer Science & Information Systems ranking, where it has gone up by 100 spots as compared to last year.

  • Academic Exchange in Brussels: Urban Science in the Heart of Europe

    The heart of Europe, the headquarters of the EU, dozens of museums and historic streets – this is Brussels as seen by tourists. But for an urbanist, this city, with all its sights, is still a place where many issues are yet to be solved. How do you set up new spaces in the old city, ensure pedestrian connectivity and make a city modern? Ekaterina Grekhnyova, a Master’s student at ITMO University, tackled these and other tasks during a semester spent at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She spoke to ITMO.NEWS about studying and living in Belgium.
