New Metamaterial-Enhanced MRI Technology Successfully Tested on Human Subjects
Scientists from the Netherlands and Russia designed and tested a new metasurface-based technology for enhancing the local sensitivity of MRI scanners on human test subjects for the first time. The metasurface consists of thin resonant strips arranged periodically. Placed under a patient's head, it provides much higher image quality from the local brain region. The results, published in Scientific Reports, show that the use of metasurfaces can potentially reduce image acquisition time, make the procedure more comfortable for patients and acquire higher resolution images to allow diseases to be diagnosed at an earlier stage.

Visiting Scientist Silvio Hrabar: Why It’s Important to Find New Uses for Old Discoveries
Being a scientist doesn’t just mean going to work – it means enjoying one’s work and turning it into a lifestyle, says Silvio Hrabar, ITMO University’s visiting scientist from University of Zagreb. He is conducting research into so-called “active” metamaterials which could provide a method of removing the physical limits of metamaterials. After all, these limits are the main reason why it’s so difficult to find an application for this technology. Trapping Light: Anisotropic Structures Can Increase Optical Device's Efficiency
ITMO's scientists Yuri Kivshar and Mikhail Rybin published an article in the News&Views section of the Nature Photonics journal on the research of their colleagues from Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology. The article explains how the Spanish researchers succeeded in using the anisotropic properties of a compound for creating simpler yet more effective optical devices based on the so-called bound states in continuous spectrum. In future, this discovery can be applied in optical detection systems and other devices, shared Mikhail Rybin, Deputy Head of ITMO's Department of Dielectric and Semiconductor Photonics and senior research officer of the Spectroscopy of Solids Laboratory of the Ioffe Institute.

Solitons for Optical Computing: ITMO’s Physicist Receives a Presidential Grant
Roman Savelyev, researcher of the Department of Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials, received a grant for his work devoted to micro structures that can assist in light signal control at ultrashort distances. The results of the research can be applied to development of optical computing.

Scientists Produce Water Based Tunable Metasurfaces
Scientists from Russia and Denmark firstly demonstrated a tunable metasurface based on the most common substance on the Earth — water. Artificially produced materials, called metasurfaces, manipulate microwaves and are known for long. Currently the researchers show that water based metasurface may perform like metal or silicon ones, being at the same time extremely cheap and tunable right in the operation process. The scientists studied properties of the metasurface just in that frequency range, which is the same as modern gadgets have, and suggested that it can be used to block mobile signals. The study was published in Applied Physics Letters.

Russian Scientists Develop New Metasurfaces for Deep UV-Imaging
Russian researchers developed a new material, which converts infrared light to ultrashort pulses of ultraviolet. For this purpose, the scientists exposed silicon film to laser so that its relief adjusted under light wavelength and made properties of the material resonant. In the end, the researchers got a cheap and easy-to-make metasurface, which is as effective as existing ones. The new technology can help create compact UV generators for biophotonics and medicine, and also devices for ultradense data processing in optical communication. The study was published in Nanoscale.
