  • 2019 Presidential Scholarship: ITMO Winners on Their Research and Internships

    Seventeen young scientists from ITMO University have become winners of the presidential scholarship contest. This academic year, they can go abroad to study and work alongside their international colleagues solving scientific tasks in their fields of focus. We spoke to some of the winners to find out what research they work on, which universities they chose for their exchange, and whether the victory came as a surprise.

  • ITMO University Scientists Present Record Amount of Works at the 2019 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference in Prague

    GECCO (Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference), which this year took place in Prague, Czech Republic, is one of the biggest and most prestigious scientific events in the field of evolutionary computation. ITMO University scientists have been active participants of the conference since 2011, regularly presenting the results of their work to the international community. But this year, ITMO’s representation reached a record high with 11 reports, tackling both fundamental and applied aspects of evolutionary computation, being presented by the staff and students of the Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. The research by the Bachelor’s graduate Vitaly Karavaev was recognized as the best in the student section.

  • METANANO 2019: Conference on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials

    The 4th METANANO Conference on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials has recently ended in St. Petersburg. Organized by ITMO University’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, the event brought together some 400 researchers from Europe, America, Asia and Africa. In the course of five days, they discussed a wide range of topics, from fundamental research in photonics and plasmonics to business projects in the field of radiofrequency technologies, bionanotechnologies and solar energy.   • SCAMT Workshop Week: English-Language Summer School on Topical Research and Cutting-Edge Equipment

    On June 24-30, ITMO University’s SCAMT Laboratory held the international summer educational course SCAMT Workshop Week. Participants from Greece, Iran, China and Russia attended lectures and workshops and collaborated on projects in groups. The main goal of the course was to help the young scientists obtain experience of working with modern equipment and achieve a practical, real-world result.

  • Twitch, Twitter and Depression: Young Researchers Present Their Projects at ITMO University Poster Session

    As part of the 4th international conference “Digital Transformation and Global Society”, ITMO University has recently hosted the Forum of Young Scientists. Its main aim was to unite young Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD researchers and experienced scientists in informal discussions on their research. The students had to prepare posters on their research projects and explain them to other participants and judges.   • PhD Student from MIT on Internship at ITMO, Russian Culture and Science

    Charles Roques-Carmes is a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who works under the guidance of Marin Soljačić, a renowned scientist famous for his research in the field of wireless nonradiative energy transfer and various issues of photonics and electromagnetics. The young researcher came to ITMO for a three-month internship in order to work with scientists from the Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. Charles stresses that coming to Russia was a well-thought-out decision: here, not only can he work in a promising research field, but he can also practice his Russian which he has been learning since his school days. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about the specifics of working at ITMO University and why the Russian language can often appear harder than studying nanophotonics.

  • ITMO Researchers Win Russian Academy of Sciences Award

    The Russian Academy of Sciences has recently announced the recipients of its annual award recognizing outstanding young scientists and students of Russian higher education institutions. Among this year’s winners are four research associates from ITMO University: a group of scientists comprised of Valentin Milichko, Dmitry Zuev and Sergey Makarov, who took first prize in the field of general physics and astronomy, and ITMO University Master’s student and engineer Artem Ashirov, who won the prize for a project of applicational significance.

  • ITMO Professor Ekaterina Skorb And President Vladimir Putin Discuss the Future of Chemical Science in Russia

    On May 17, during his visit to Sochi, President Vladimir Putin met with several young scientists and megagrant recipients. During a prior meeting in 2016, he listened to their suggestions on the improvement of the country’s system for rewarding scientists and commending research work in Russia. Since then, a number of contests and grants for supporting young scientists’ research has been launched.
