What’s it like to take part in organizing a major international conference as a first-year student? How do you communicate with scientists from the world over and solve an avalanche of issues in mere hours? This July, ITMO University was home to the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table, which brought together renowned chemists, physicists, educators, and historians of chemistry from Russia, the US, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. The event’s organizing committee was comprised, in part, of students of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems, who spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their experience and their future plans.

ITMO University Scientists Present Record Amount of Works at the 2019 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference in Prague
GECCO (Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference), which this year took place in Prague, Czech Republic, is one of the biggest and most prestigious scientific events in the field of evolutionary computation. ITMO University scientists have been active participants of the conference since 2011, regularly presenting the results of their work to the international community. But this year, ITMO’s representation reached a record high with 11 reports, tackling both fundamental and applied aspects of evolutionary computation, being presented by the staff and students of the Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. The research by the Bachelor’s graduate Vitaly Karavaev was recognized as the best in the student section.

Mendeleev 150: IUPAC’s Birthday and Invention of Periodic Law
The international conference Mendeleev 150 took place at ITMO University on June 26-28. The event’s participants celebrated not only the 150th anniversary of the creation of Mendeleev’s periodic table of elements but also the birthday of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which supported the conference. Crystals and Peculiar Stars: Final Day of Mendeleev 150 at ITMO
The international conference Mendeleev 150 at ITMO University has come to its conclusion. The event was held on the occasion of the UN’s International Year of the Periodic Table and brought together the top chemists, physicists, educators, and other experts from Russia, the USA, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. Over the course of three days, the event’s speakers discussed the top scientific trends and the effects of periodic table-related discoveries on today’s research. The closing presentations were delivered by the Russian crystallographer and chemist Artem Oganov, child prodigy Platon Kachalin, and the evolutionary biologist David Seaborg, the son of famed Nobel Laureate Glenn Seaborg.

ITMO Urban Studies Specialist Participates in Major Urban Planning Conference in China
On July 8-12, the biggest research conference in the field of urban studies, Computers in Urban Planning and Urban Management (СUPUM), took place in China. Held every second year, the conference brings together leading urban specialists from all over the world. At this year’s conference, Russia was represented by two participants, among whom was Egor Smirnov, a staff of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies. METANANO 2019: Conference on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials
The 4th METANANO Conference on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials has recently ended in St. Petersburg. Organized by ITMO University’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, the event brought together some 400 researchers from Europe, America, Asia and Africa. In the course of five days, they discussed a wide range of topics, from fundamental research in photonics and plasmonics to business projects in the field of radiofrequency technologies, bionanotechnologies and solar energy. METANANO 2019, the fourth conference on nanophotonics and metamaterials, has started in St. Petersburg. ITMO University at World Conference of Science Journalists
At the beginning of July, the Swiss city of Lausanne hosted the 11th World Conference of Science Journalists, which brought together over 1,000 specialists from Europe, the US, Canada, Latin America, Asia and Australia. Russia was represented by 18 people, including members of the Association of Communicators in Education and Science (AKSON), ITMO University graduates and Master’s students in science communication, and staff of ITMO Science Communication Center. In the course of four days, they discussed the most topical questions of science journalism and communication and visited CERN and Campus Biotech, where they familiarized themselves with the principles of working in major science organizations.
