How to Start Your Own Business: Advice from Experts
ITMO University just hosted an expert session for hardware, high-tech and IT projects of the Future Technologies accelerator. This year, a record-breaking amount of participants made it to the final selection - 25 teams in total. Up until March, they’ll be finalizing their technologies, choosing and testing business models, studying their target audiences and making their first sales. Recently, the novice entrepreneurs’ projects were assessed by experts - founders and CEO’s of companies, specialists on growing markets, the financial sector and marketing. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, they’ve shared about why most startups face common problems, the usual mistakes novice startupers face, and what there is to expect from 2018 in terms of promising technologies.

ITMO Students' Startup Lets Gamers Play With Top E-Sports Players
Research by Mail.Ru Group shows that nearly every second Internet user in Russia plays online games. Last year, the Ministry of Sport placed e-sports on par with traditional sports such as football or basketball. Tony Estanguet, member of the International Olympic Committee, recently said that e-sports may well be included into the 2024 Olympics program. On the wave of e-sports’ growing popularity, ITMO Master’s students Nikolai Golos and Ivan Bormotkin launched their new project Funbo at the university’s Future Technologies accelerator. Stickerum Startup Brings Your Favorite Telegram Stickers to Life
Social networks such as VK and the Telegram messenger app have made stickers hugely popular on the Russian internet. There are so many stickers available that you can express any emotion and replace whole sentences using them. However, the users don't just love the virtual stickers - you can find actual stickers of various brands, events, organizations and even famous personalities on laptops, smartphones, notebooks and more. Three students from ITMO University decided to bring the virtual stickers into reality, launching a startup called Stickerum, which lets Telegram users make real stickers out of virtual ones. Our special interview with Vitaliy Guryn, member of Stickerum’s team, gives us more insight into the new startup - and how to order your first set of stickers.

Doing Business European-style: Optimal Drive Will Accelerate in Helsinki
After winning the Finlanding category at the GoTech forum, ITMO Technopark’s resident Optimal Drive got the opportunity to participate in the NewGo acceleration program in Helsinki. This means that the company will get legal backing and advisory support from the Finnish accelerator that will allow it to enter the European market. TechNet: New Opportunities for Innovative Startups
In future, all companies will share the same manufacturing processes and technologies and use similar equipment and materials. This is why it will be the intellectual component of their product that will provide most of the competitive advantage, as it is something that can't easily be copied. The ability to adapt a product to the rapidly changing market will be essential, as well. Production chain will change, too: major companies will make use of services provided by small innovative businesses by outsourcing particular tasks; products and technological processes will have "digital doubles", and robotization will extrude the human factor. The TechNet workgroup will be developing such an ecosystem as part of the National Technology Initiative; as of now, it offers different startups an opportunity to contribute to its development and get governmental support via the special TechNet program of the GenerationS accelerator.

Developers Present Projects at Girls4Tech Hackathon
This summer the Girls4Tech project school for female programmers, engineers and entrepreneurs was launched in St. Petersburg and Moscow. It is organized by ITMO University, the Moscow Polytechnic University and the Moscow office of international accelerator NUMA. In late August, a hackathon was held as part of the program. Participants from both cities met at ITMO University in the offices of the IdealMachine accelerator to try and solve case tasks from ITMO University and the Petrovich and Bayer companies.

3D Printers For Kids: A High-Tech Toy
3D printers for kids may sound strange, since such devices tend to be used by the industry or big IT-companies. Yet, working and creating using a 3D printer can be fun and interesting for just anyone! Stanislav Pimenov, graduate of the Future Technologies accelerator, develops and sells 3D printers and special educational software. His new startup can well be the next step in promoting knowledge about modern technology among children.

ITMO Business Incubator Team Attends SHIP Festival
From July 11 to 13, the *SHIP startup-festival was held in Kotka (Finland), attended by participants from more than 20 countries. At the festival, ITMO University’s Business Incubator introduced three startups: Laeneco, Statanly Technologies and Coffee Cycle, which are currently accelerated by Future Technologies’ START program. ITMO.NEWS had a chance to talk with members of the three teams who received praise from European experts and signed preliminary contracts with investors.

Teen in Tech Workshop: Best Projects by Young Developers
Last Friday, the participants of the three-day TeeninTech intensive course presented their graduation projects to an expert jury. Teen in Tech is a technological entrepreneurship school for teenagers organized by ITMO's Center for the Promotion of Youth Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship and Project Management and Innovation Department. ITMO.NEWS learned about the projects the young developers have been working on.
