What I love most about listening to personalized playlists is that you never know what you’re about to discover, and if you’ve never been much of a, say, folk or jazz person, you might just as well become one. That’s what happened to me this month – I found Last Disco by Superkomfort, and it’s more than just good. Trust me on this, electronic music is probably my least favorite genre yet this one feels kinda different. It’s more of a catchy-vocal-hooks-and-rhymes situation. What’s more, this song is by a young little-known guy from Russia who has just a few more songs recorded. I was quite surprised when I learned that.

You know what albums and scents have in common? They both have the incredible power of bringing back memories – sometimes of a time you didn’t think you needed to remember, like your teenagehood. Mid-month, in a moment of weakness I had a sudden and powerful itch to listen to Paramore circa Riot! (2007) and even All We Know Is Falling (2005), as well as, bafflingly, Avril Lavingne’s first album (which turns 20! this year). A little disclaimer: I obviously discovered these albums later than they were released, I was eight in 2005 – and my music choices were questionable at the very least. Am I a young couldn’t-care-less punk again, you might ask? Well, no, not that I ever was. But I do definitely feel strong, a tad YOLO and rebellious, and, most importantly, whole. Maybe you will, too.

My recent commute hero is Walker Hayes with his singalong hit Fancy Like. It might not be the most brainiac song you’ve ever heard but when you’re standing in a fast-food drive-thru or in a traffic jam or making dinner out of whatever is left in the fridge, humming Don’t need no Tesla to impress her really puts things in perspective. And smiling people dancing in the kitchen are somehow way more fun than a fancy steak.

Honestly, I had too much on my plate this month, so I basically stopped listening to music because I couldn’t handle any more information than I had to perceive. Here’s something from the archives, though: Die SelektionMuskelberg. These guys visited Russia last autumn for several concerts and I had a blast at one of them, and I think you too might enjoy the powerful rhythm and mysterious lyrics in German.
