When it comes to studying the fundamental processes of our reality, such as various quantum phenomena, one challenge left unsolved – until recently – has been about finding a way to preserve certain properties of twisted electrons. But now, a research team from ITMO has unveiled a mathematical model that shows how twisted particles can maintain their quantum properties within an accelerator. Next up, the scientists intend to conduct on-site experiments to confirm their discovery.

No, Micrometron is not the name of an obscure Transformers character. Instead, it is a new software-hardware complex that intends to accelerate quality control processes in various contexts – from metallurgy to prosthetics. Combining a high-precision measuring unit with specialized analytical software, it is able to assess the quality of machine parts, implants, and other products under 30 mm in size.

At the moment, an MRI scan of the knee can take a half-hour or longer – an issue not only for patients, but also for hospitals dealing with scheduling and queues. Now, an AI model developed by ITMO Master’s students cuts the scan time by four times; results are ready within just 5-10 minutes, all thanks to an algorithm that uses medical data to “fill in the blanks.” The produced images are comparable in quality and accuracy to regular MRI scans. In addition, the model comes with a built-in self-assessment module.
