Food Science & Technology

This year, ITMO was represented in the subject for the first time, the only Russian university to be featured. The university placed in the 301-400 group. In 2026, ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies stepped into a new stage of its development, headed by Dr. Elena Koshel. Her mission is to create an ecosystem that performs the full cycle of development – from lab research to market launch.

“I think that this achievement is chiefly courtesy of the team of the Faculty of Biotechnologies, who have been consistently developing food science at ITMO. We were able to unite biotechnologies with engineering and intelligent technologies, establishing an interdisciplinary approach that is reflected in our research and educational programs. For instance, this year, supported by the federal program Priority 2030, we launched projects that aim to develop multiagent systems for the design of starter culture compositions and indicators for smart product packaging. An important aspect of our approach is close collaboration with business that shortens the time between coming up with a scientific idea and creating a product that delivers a market-relevant result,” says Dr. Koshel.
