ITMO University Transferring Students to Online and Distance Learning
As a means of preventing the spread of the coronavirus infection, the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education has recommended all higher educational institutions in Russia to switch to distance learning. An associated decree was signed on Saturday, March 14 by Valery Falkov, the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. Starting on March 16 and until the end of the academic year – or until the stabilization of epidemiological conditions – ITMO University will conduct its educational activities online. To that end, the university will employ a full range of educational technologies for online and distance learning. If needed, students will be provided with individual curricula.

At the Intersection of Biology, Chemistry, and IT: New Participants of ITMO Fellowship & Professorship Program on Their Research at ITMO
How to make scientists, constantly cooped up in their laboratories, communicate more and find new points of contact for joint work at the intersection of several fields of knowledge? This question is especially topical for those who work on fixed-term contracts or as part of an exchange and are thus especially intent on spending all their time on work. It is for supporting communication between different scientists coming to ITMO that the university’s Internationalization Department organizes meetups for participants of the ITMO Fellowship & Professorship program. First ITMO Ecohack Participants Create Automatic Waste Sorting System
ITMO University has recently hosted its first environmental hackathon. The contest, co-organized by the ITMO.GREEN eco-club and ITMO Case Club, took place at Business Incubator Ingria. ITMO University Launches Laboratory of Genomic Diversity
In 2020, ITMO University has launched the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity under the academic supervision of the renowned American scientist Stephen J. O’Brien. This new department is to become an important Russian center of bioinformatics, where scientists will work on collecting genomes of different living organisms and studying genetic diversity of animals and people. This work should help in fighting many diseases while also providing a better understanding of the ways in which biodiversity changes on our planet. ITMO.NEWS met with the coordinators of this emerging laboratory and learned what research they plan to do in the near future.

QS WUR by Subject 2020: ITMO Tops Russian Electrical & Electronic Engineering Ranking, Climbs Further in Others
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), one of the world’s foremost authorities on the assessment of higher education, has published its annual list of university rankings by subject. This year, ITMO University was included in seven subject rankings, improving on last year’s six. The St. Petersburg-based university has been named the top Russian university in the Electrical & Electronic Engineering ranking for the second year in a row and was also included on the ranking’s global top-250.

Explore Saint Petersburg Like a Local: Moskovsky Prospect

Researchers Suggest Using Blockchain to Boost Self-Driving Cars’ Security
Scientists from ITMO’s Faculty of Secure Information Technologies have suggested applying blockchain technology to monitoring road traffic. Their algorithm will make it possible for driverless cars to create unalterable activity logs to document any road accident they detect. The accidents will be kept in databases to identify potential “black spots”. The project was showcased at the International Conference on Information Networking 2020 (ICOIN 2020) in Barcelona and is published in the SCOPUS-indexed proceedings of the Conference.
