We bet you were expecting us to cover the 2019 Oscars, werent’cha? Well our hurt is still as raw as are the emotions in that Saucy, oh sorry, Shallow duet, so we’ll save our breath for later. (Green of all things Book winning best picture? Rami Malek is best actor? Did the world end and we all ended up in hell and I knew nothing about it?) Instead, today’s Movie Fridays tackles something that, unlike a good half of the 2019 Academy awardees, we all love: music in movies. Or, to get a tad more technical, diegetic music in movies, the one that is part and parcel of their internal narrative, interacting with the characters and their surroundings. European University’s Nikita Lomagin: How IT is Changing Historical Science
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the 872-day siege by the Nazi Germany. ITMO University was one of the venues of a nation-wide academic conference dedicated to this occasion. Even today, historians continue to study the circumstances of one of the 20th century’s greatest tragedies. Nikita Lomagin, a Russian historian, leading expert on the Siege of Leningrad, and a professor of the European University at St. Petersburg, studies the social and economic aspects of that period. In an interview with for ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about the scientific methods of history, the benefits IT offers to historians, and why we must discover new forms of representing historical knowledge.

QS WUR by Subject 2019: ITMO University in Top-150 in Computer Science and First in Russia in Art & Design
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 have just been revealed. ITMO University has strengthened its positions in three subject rankings – ‘Computer Science & Information Systems’, ‘Engineering: Electrical & Electronic’, and ‘Physics & Astronomy’ – in two of which the University has risen by 150 places. ITMO also appears in three other QS subject rankings. In the ‘Art & Design’ ranking, ITMO University has made its debut in the global top-200 and secured the first place among Russian universities.

How Researchers Use Big Data to Fight HIV and Addiction
Georgiy Bobashev is a Fellow at the RTI International (USA), an independent, nonprofit research institute. Today, the institute uses Big Data analysis to study various aspects of life in the USA, primarily those concerning healthcare. Researchers work on issues related to drug addiction, medical products, the propagation of diseases such as HIV or diabetes, and other topics. Georgiy Bobashev has recently come to ITMO University for an open lecture and spoke to ITMO.NEWS about his experience with analyzing medical data, what socially significant research is being done in the USA right now, and which scientific methods give us answers to some of the most important questions.

Yandex Director of Marketing Andrey Sebrant: We’re Living in the Age of Implementation
On December 18, the Winter School “It’s Your Call!”, organized by ITMO University and Sberbank, began its second season. 180 bachelor and Master’s students from all over Russia joined each other in St. Petersburg. How to Get a Job in Game Development
The long-awaited Russian videogame Atomic Heart is embroiled in controversy. It wasn’t long ago that the game’s trailer racked up over 500,000 views on YouTube – a near-unprecedented number for a Russian game – but some of the game’s developers have anonymously complained of unnecessarily rough management at the studio and constant, unpredictable firings. We spoke to members of the Russian GameDev community, educators, and partners of ITMO University’s Master’s program ‘Game Development Technologies’ to find out if the rumors about Atomic Heart have any weight to them, and how newcomers to the industry can avoid such situations.
