Cosmonaut Training Methods to Apply In Your Daily Life
The Network of Nuclear Technology Information Centres arranged an online meeting with experts from the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Biomedical Problems (IMBP RAN) who had participated in experiments for simulation of transplanetary expeditions. During the SIRIUS and Mars-500 projects, volunteers had been isolated for 240 and 520 days, respectively. According to the scientists, that's how long a trip to Mars and back would take. Elena Fomina, the head of Laboratory for Prevention of Hypogravity Disorders at IMBP RAN, and Yurii Bubeev, the head of State Scientific Center’s Department of Psychology and Psychophysiology at IMBP RAN, talked about what helped participants stay healthy both physically and mentally, their daily routine, and how their experiences can be applied in daily life.

FEDOR: Meet Russia’s First Robot Astronaut (Who Also Does Splits)
Fedor is Russia’s first anthropomorphic (humanlike) robot. On August 22, it will fly to the International Space Station (ISS) to perform a range of tasks under the guidance of a fellow, this time fully human, astronaut. Going forward, Fedor will serve as the first test pilot of Federation, a new Russian-made piloted spacecraft set to launch in 2022. It is also possible that Fedor will perform a round-the-Moon flight aboard Federation. The space discoveries of the 1960-70s changed people’s perception of the future, as well as fashion, architecture and design. What must be done to prepare people for living in space? Roscosmos Opens Admissions for Astronauts
At the end of spring, the Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities launched an open call for astronauts-to-be. As before, the selection is competition-based. The application deadline is June 1, 2020, which goes in line with Roscosmos’ plan to form a new team of astronauts by the end of 2020. Among the most sought-after specialists are physicians, engineers and pilots. What is also remarkable is that the competition commission wants the new team to be more gender-balanced, so women are actively encouraged to apply. The selection process will last for two years and result in 4-6 new astronauts joining the Roscosmos team. Read on to learn more about the competition and application process.

Self-Driving Cars and Rovers: ITMO Students’ Projects at Skolkovo and Innopolis

An Expert’s Opinion on the Future of Space Exploration
For almost half a century, ever since the end of the Apollo program in 1971, humans haven’t gotten any higher than 600 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. However, some scientists believe that we may soon see a new era of space exploration. Among them is Dmitry Oliferovich, a journalist and science communicator, who gave an open lecture on Cosmonautics Day and spoke about the construction of a space station on the Moon’s orbit and sending humans to Mars.
