  • Russian Team Scores Resounding Victory at First European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI 2021)

    A team of Russian school students helmed by an ITMO coach has demonstrated brilliant results at EGOI 2021. All of the team members Daria Grekova, Ekaterina Poray, Alisa Gladchenko, and Ekaterina Shilyaeva – brought home gold medals. Alisa Gladchenko and Ekaterina Shilyaeva also took the top two spots on the competition’s leaderboard.

  • How an ITMO Student and Her Friend's YouTube Channel is Breaking Stereotypes About Women in IT

    Isabella Merkulova and Mariia Kokaiia work together at Panoramik GameDev Studio, and recently they started the YouTube channel DEVchata (a pun on the Russian word for “gals” – Ed.). The co-hosts conduct interviews with experts from the IT world and discuss the industry's concerns. ITMO.NEWS talked to Isabella and Mariia to find out about the channel’s history and plans.

  • 10th Birthday of International Sports Programming Project Codeforces Celebrated at ITMO University

    Codeforces, one of the most famous competitive programming platforms in the world, has celebrated its tenth birthday. It was created by then Saratov State University lecturer Mikhail Mirzayanov at the end of the 2000s as an online community for people who like to solve programming tasks. Now Mikhail works at ITMO University, which is a second home for Codeforces. ITMO.NEWS attended the celebration party and asked its participants how Codeforces had influenced their life and the entire community.

  • Patrick Asante: The Support From the International Office Is Incredible

    Patrick Asante Owusu comes from Accra, Ghana and holds a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. He’s a second-year Master’s student in Big Data & Extreme Computing with a specialization in Applied Mathematics and Informatics. After completing his bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Research and Development and Consulting, he really wanted to continue his studies. First he worked in Ghana as a software developer and in 2017 moved to Russia to study the Russian Language at Belgorod State Technological University. In 2018 he enrolled in a Master’s degree at ITMO and will complete his studies this summer.

  • ITMO Graduate from the Republic of Chad on His University Experience

    ITMO University’s international alumni pursue a world of different opportunities after their graduation. Some of them return to their home countries to travel their professional path. Dezoumbe Ouinra, a 2007 graduate of the specialization “Design and Technology of Electronic Computing Devices”, went back to his native Republic of Chad to work at the national Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, and continued his career at the Chadian national television, supporting its transition to state-of-the-art technologies. With the help of ITMO’s Alumni Center, ITMO.NEWS managed to talk to Dezoumbe to find out why he decided to study in St. Petersburg and how this experience has been helping him in the years since.

  • ITMO University and Government of Moscow’s Department for Education and Science to Launch IT Classes in City’s Schools

    Isaac Kalina, a minister in the Government of Moscow and head of the latter’s Department for Education and Science, and ITMO University rector Vladimir Vasilyev have signed a road map on the implementation of the project “IT classes in Moscow schools”. Earlier, the initiative was put forward by the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin. The classes, which aim to introduce school students to modern information technologies, are to be launched starting from September 1, 2019.

  • Ensuring Cybersecurity: Hacking to Stop Hackers

    At the end of April, Ekaterinburg hosted an annual Russian Cybersecurity Competition known as Russian Capture the Flag (RuCTF). ITMO University’s student team LC↯BC took the fourth place in the overall ranking and the second place among Russian teams. RuCTF is a team competition in cybersecurity when participants have to protect their own servers and hack the opponents’ servers. A team from Ural Federal University has been hosting this competition for more than ten years. ITMO.NEWS talked to Vlad Roskov and Alexander Menschikov, the coordinators of SPbCTF project which holds weekly seminars in competitive hacking at ITMO University, and asked them some questions about CTF.

  • ITMO University Opens Educational Courses on BIM Technologies in Building and Infrastructure Design

    ITMO University has launched an educational program for professional training in cooperation with OOO “Research and Development Center “Etalon””. The program is mainly dedicated to study of BIM technology. It can be used to account for all the properties and measurements of the building not only during construction, but also during its operational stage and to predict the possible faults in the structure as well as monitor its condition in real-time. By increasing their theoretical and practical knowledge through the program, specialists are able to work as BIM- managers, coordinators and modelers.
