Winners of National Competition to go to RoboCup Asia-Pacific
The RoboCup Russia Open robotics championships was held for the third time, in Tomsk, where 118 teams from 11 regions in Russia participated. For three days, from 13 to 15 April, at the site of the national stage of world robotic championships RoboCup, various robots competed: lifeguards, football players, actors. The school team of ITMO University participated for the first time in the category Humanoid KidSize Soccer League (university level) and took first place.

Danish Exchange Students Developing Lighting Design Solution for St. Petersburg Park
How does lighting design help reflect natural occurrences in the urban environment and make the latter more accommodating for people? Beata Kublik and Paulina Dudkiewicz, Master’s students from Aalborg University (Denmark), are currently doing an internship at ITMO University’s Higher School of Lighting Design. The two students are developing a new lighting design model for one of St. Petersburg’s public parks using a nature-oriented approach. They believe that the value of light as an architectural tool will only increase wherever people haven’t yet realized its importance.

Arizona University Expert: Why People Don’t Want to Learn Foreign Languages
People all over the world are still reluctant to learn new languages – even English, which is commonly seen as the new global language. We spoke about this topic with Robert Cote, Director of the Writing Skills Improvement Program at the University of Arizona, who came to ITMO University for the ESP Conference. Robert explained why no one can ever fully learn a language, why it’s important to start soon and why language learning can never work without tutors and group work.

Russian and Swiss Students Collaborate on Social Issue Initiatives
Last week ITMO University and the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland conducted a short-term exchange involving 30 students from Switzerland and Russia. The students discussed and collaborated on various practices related to social entrepreneurship. ITMO’s Social Design and Entrepreneurship Center organized the exchange as part of a program for international youth exchange in social services. ITMO.NEWS describes the projects developed by the teams over four days of working together.

Master’s Exchange Students on Learning Lighting Design in Copenhagen
Making a cramped square feel comfortable, improving lives of medical patients and helping school students study better: students from Aalborg University (Denmark) use light to solve these and other tasks. This Scandinavian country is home to more than the concept of hygge – it is also one of the major European centers for modern art; here, lighting design projects aren’t limited to just museums and art spaces, but are actually becoming a part of the urban environment. Valeria Lukinskaya and Dmitry Chukhin, Master’s students at ITMO’s Higher School of Lighting Design, learned about the best practices and approaches in lighting design during an internship at Aalborg University.

VK’s Head of Growth and Research On Delegating Routine Tasks to AI
Last Sunday ITMO University announced the results of the ITMO VK Olympiad. This year, more than 3,000 school students from 70 regions of Russia and CIS took part in the competition that tested their knowledge in 6 disciplines. The finalists got to attend an open lecture on data analysis and machine learning technologies by Andrei Zakonov, the head of growth and research at VK and a graduate of ITMO University. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, he revealed how machine learning is changing Russia’s biggest social network, how school students can get started in that field and what kind of skills VK looks for in its employees.

Learning Russian and Making Movies: a Finn's Exchange Semester at ITMO University
A student of the University of Oulu (Finland), Niki Tenhunen is spending this spring semester at ITMO University as an exchange student. Niki is a second-year Bachelor’s student with a major in international business. When he’s not studying, he strolls about the city for hours on end, fights stereotypes about life in Russia and even helps make movies. For our interview, we asked Niki about his life in St. Petersburg, its surprises and attractions.
