ITMO Student on Building Robots, Dancing with Nobel Winners and Being on Chinese TV
This year, Valery Chernov enrolled at ITMO’s Department of Computer Science and Control Systems in an experimental program with unique educational tracks. This December, he was the only Russian representative at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS), which coincides with the Nobel Prize festivities and is held annually since 1976. During the event, participants presented their research, attended lectures by Nobel Prize laureates, discussed the relevant issues and even danced with some of the world’s brightest minds.

The History of Light in Art
For a long time, light was only seen as a functional element of everyday life. Over time, artists have begun to study its properties, the ways it can accentuate shapes and textures. In the 20th century, it became its own “character” in art, architecture, theater and performance art. Caty Olive, a light designer and artist from France, spoke about the history of people’s relationship with light at a lecture in St. Petersburg. The event took place at Alexandrinsky Theatre’s New Stage, supported by ITMO University’s Higher School of Lighting Design.

ITMO Graduate on Helping Develop Cardano’s ADA Cryptocurrency
ITMO Graduate Arseniy Seroka’s company Serokell has participated in the development of IOHK’s blockchain project Cardano and the associated cryptocurrency ADA. The currency’s capitalization, i.e. its overall value, has already risen above 2 billion USD. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Arseniy to find out what makes Cardano different from all the other blockchain systems and what advantages cryptocurrencies have over regular currency.

Top 2 Among Engineering Universities
The project “Social Navigator” of the news agency “Rossiya Segodnya” has unveiled this year’s national ranking of Russian universities (link in Russian), analysing each institution’s demand in the Russian economy. The research took into account 448 universities organized into six core groups, including classical universities and those in the fields of engineering, agriculture, humanities, medicine and management. As with last year, ITMO University came second in the ranking of engineering universities. Also in the top three are Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI, 1st place), and Bauman Moscow State Technical University (3rd place).

DreamDorm.Shine Contest: Prove YOUR Room is the Best!
The DreamDorm.Shine contest has launched at ITMO University. Its goal is to encourage students to treat their dormitory with care, develop their communication skills and promote cooperation. In this endeavor they will be assisted by ITMO’s Student Dorm Council, which has recently won the second place in a city-wide competition for the best university & college student dorm council of St. Petersburg.

New U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman Visits ITMO
On his first official visit to St. Petersburg since his appointment to the position in October, Ambassador Huntsman set time aside to visit ITMO University. The visit took place on 29th November 2017; the Ambassador met the University’s administration and students to consult about future collaborations.

ITMO Team Passes ACM ICPC Regionals, Will Compete for World Cup in Beijing
On December 3, the semi-finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest were held at ITMO University. The university was one of the four venues for the Northern Eurasia regional contest for Russia and CIS countries, in which more than 300 teams participated. 16 teams were selected to take part in the final stage of the contest, which will take place in Beijing in April of 2018.
