• Bike Ride With Rector Goes National

  Yesterday marked the seventh time when students, staff and friends of ITMO University meet with Rector Vladimir Vasilyev for a picturesque bike ride in St. Petersburg’s seaside district. This year, the baton was picked up in Vladivostok, where the international conference METANANO-2017 is currently underway. After midnight in Moscow time (7:30 AM in Vladivostok), 40 participants of the conference, including Russian and international professors, scientists and students, started the final day of the conference with an invigorating bike ride. • Forester Soon to Hit the World Robot Olympiad in Costa Rica

  ITMO University’s high school students’ robotics team has made it into World Robot Olympiad, which will be held in November in Costa Rica. The main theme of this year's competition is sustainability, creating sustainabots that can change our world without affecting it, integrating environmental, social and economic aspects. So, the special team trained at ITMO will show the world their Forester robot, which can automatically monitor the environmental status of forests. In addition to "Forester", three more Russian robots will go to Costa Rica.

• How to Launch a Tech Project and Succeed

  What does one need to get into tech, and, ultimately, launch their own project? A unique idea, a team of professionals, materials, equipment, financing and, first and foremost, specific knowledge that can’t be gained fast and cheap. Not having even one of these things will often make even the most enthusiastic entrepreneur abandon their work before it’s even started. The staff at ITMO’s Student Laboratory OLIMP, however, believes that finding your place in the tech world isn’t as hard as it may seem. Four years ago, a student team had a similar experience, and they are now ready to share it with others. As part of Gogol Library’s “Popular Science Week”, OLIMP’s co-head Kirill Bodrov gave a talk about the traps and pitfalls of technological entrepreneurship, why it’s important to visit FabLabs and science festivals and where to find the right skills and people for a project.

  When the European X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) was inaugurated on September 1, a whole range of opportunities became available to the world's scientists - opportunities they could only dream of before. Soon, the new facility will contribute to new advances that seemed impossible due to the lack of equipment this powerful. • ITMO Scientists Help Link Alzheimer’s to Lack of Energy in Immune Cells

  An international scientific team that includes scientists from ITMO University has discovered why a mutation or lack of TREM2 protein in the nervous system of immune cells increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It turns out that in these cases, immune cells cease to receive nourishment and begin to “digest” themselves. The research was published in Cell journal.
