    The title image shows a genus of yeast called Brettanomyces demonstrating the ability to form pseudomycelium in response to environmental changes. The students and staff of ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies cultivate and study yeasts to, inter alia, produce β-glucans known for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.

    At the end of February, the scientific conference “Prospects of Using Polyfunctional Components of Chitin and Chitosan in Food Systems” was held at ITMO University as part of strategic cooperation between ITMO and the Federal Research Center “Fundamentals of Biotechnology” of the Russian Academy of Sciences.   • Andrei Gomez: Learn English to Get the Most Out of Life

    Andrei Gomez De Oliveira Giovanni is a Master’s degree student in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at ITMO University. He is currently doing an internship at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (Brazil) where, under the supervision of Dr. Dmitry Kolpashchikov, his team is developing quantitative logic-gated DNA nanomachines designed to treat cancer. Andrey’s research focuses on improving the CRISPR-Cas9 methodologies to edit the bovine genome.

    Lyudmila Nadtochiy, Vera Ivanova and Oksana Golovinskaya, lecturers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering, participated in a project dedicated to the development of academic cooperation in the field of food biotechnology between Russia and China.   • ITMO Researchers Participating in Targeted Drug Delivery Research

    Targeted delivery of medicine and genetic material to cells and tissue can be solved using micro- and nanoparticles of various types. Research in this field tends to be interdisciplinary and calls for collaboration between biologists, chemists and physicists. Mikhail Zyuzin, a postdoctoral researcher at ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering, is working with colleagues from Russia and abroad to develop new methods of targeted drug delivery.   • Edible Coating Makes Food Last Longer, Reduces Waste

    ITMO University is developing polymer coatings for food products that nearly double their shelf-life. Such coatings can be easily rinsed off with water, and are also edible. Alexander Podshivalov, their developer and engineer for ITMO’s Department of IT in the Fuel and Energy Industry explains more about his product that has recently gotten the gold medal in the innovative biotechnology solutions contest at the Bioindustry international exhibition.
