ITMO Researchers’ Project Named Top Innovative Product by St. Petersburg Committee for Science and Higher Education
A project by ITMO University’s SCAMT Industrial Lab has been named the winner of the 2019 St. Petersburg Competition of Best Innovative Projects in Science and Higher Education. The awards ceremony took place as part of the 12th St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum. The winning project, First Aid, is an innovative treatment for post-surgery scarring, stretch marks, cuts, and burns for patients of all ages. The project is being developed by the Master’s and PhD students of ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster. Olga Sokolovskaya, the head of the project, spoke with ITMO.NEWS about this invention, results of the team’s research, and their future plans.

Open Lecture by World-Famous Scientist John Ioannidis at ITMO University
On October 25, ITMO University will welcome Stanford University professor John Ioannidis, who will deliver the lecture “Medical evidence: flawed, but possible to fix!”, organized at the initiative of evidence-based medicine blog Medfront. John Ioannidis, one of the world’s most famous and cited researchers in the field of medical science, will share his thoughts about why most biomedical research findings are inaccurate and what can be done to rectify this situation.

Quizzing and Mythbusting: Medical Lab Initiative Comes to ITMO University
On August 17, the Medical Lab nationwide event will be held in Russia with the involvement of the nation’s top scientists and medical professionals. In St. Petersburg, the event is going to take place at ITMO University and will be curated by Ilya Fomintsev, an oncologist and the head of the Ne Naprasno cancer prevention foundation. During the event, the expert will speak about the history of cancer and the myths that surround this disease.

Data-Driven Medicine: How Patients May Become Their Own Doctors
Georgy Kopanitsa has worked as an expert on data-driven medicine at the Tomsk Polytechnic University and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. According to his estimates, in just a few years new medical data systems will make doctors’ work easier while reducing the cost and improving the quality of medical analysis. As a new participant of ITMO University’s Fellowship program, he recently spoke with the University’s students about his research and the goals of data-driven medicine.

ITMO Launches New Specialization in Science Communication in Medicine and Biotechnology
ITMO University’s Master’s program in Science Communication has recently launched a new track in science communication in the field of biotechnology and medicine. Students joining the program this year will be able to choose a separate track within the program, which will give them an opportunity to work with databases in medicine and healthcare, as well as learn more about the structure of medical organizations. The program’s graduates will be able to work as medical journalists and science communicators, PR specialists in major biotechnological companies, clinics, and medical organizations both in Russia and abroad.

How New Advanced Materials Help Fight Bacteria – and Cancer
Gary Hix is a professor of the University of Wolverhampton (the UK) and the head of Wolverhampton School of Sciences. Together with his research team, Prof. Hix designs anti-bacterial medical materials. In an open lecture at ITMO University, he spoke about organic-inorganic hybrid materials, metal phosphonates and oxides, and how these substances are produced. Speaking about anti-bacterial materials, Prof. Hix explained the effect of their structure on the discharge of active substances and how these materials are made to possess therapeutic qualities.
