• Ivan Deyneka on Being a PI and Designing High-Precision Sensors and Communication Networks

  Principal Investigators (PIs) become a more and more popular academic position. Are there established PIs in Russia? What prospects do they see in their work? • ITMO Physicists Create Unclonable Anti-Counterfeiting Silicon Labels

  Scientists from ITMO University developed unclonable anti-counterfeiting labels, which are based on silicon nanoparticles modified with a laser. It’s impossible to change the color, structure, and location of the particles: these parameters are random, which makes the label safe from counterfeiting. In order to check if it’s authentic, all you need to do is upload its picture into a special program.

  This summer, ITMO held the longest popular science livestream at VK Fest: 24 hours in which researchers answered 700 questions from the audience. The star guests and viewers wanted to know when people will fly to Mars, if there will ever be a time machine, and what are the current frontiers in different fields of science.   The ITMO.STARS contest (application deadline: July 25) allows talented applicants to enroll at ITMO University regardless of their Unified State Exam scores. This initiative was launched five years ago and since then, several dozen gifted applicants submitted their projects and used them to enter the university. Last year, 19 students became finalists of the contest. In this story, some of them describe what they’ve managed to achieve since then.
