Mendeleev 150: IUPAC’s Birthday and Invention of Periodic Law

Crystals and Peculiar Stars: Final Day of Mendeleev 150 at ITMO
The international conference Mendeleev 150 at ITMO University has come to its conclusion. The event was held on the occasion of the UN’s International Year of the Periodic Table and brought together the top chemists, physicists, educators, and other experts from Russia, the USA, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. Over the course of three days, the event’s speakers discussed the top scientific trends and the effects of periodic table-related discoveries on today’s research. The closing presentations were delivered by the Russian crystallographer and chemist Artem Oganov, child prodigy Platon Kachalin, and the evolutionary biologist David Seaborg, the son of famed Nobel Laureate Glenn Seaborg.

ITMO Urban Studies Specialist Participates in Major Urban Planning Conference in China
On July 8-12, the biggest research conference in the field of urban studies, Computers in Urban Planning and Urban Management (СUPUM), took place in China. Held every second year, the conference brings together leading urban specialists from all over the world. At this year’s conference, Russia was represented by two participants, among whom was Egor Smirnov, a staff of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies. METANANO 2019: Conference on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials
The 4th METANANO Conference on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials has recently ended in St. Petersburg. Organized by ITMO University’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, the event brought together some 400 researchers from Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Over 400 Scientists from All Over the World to Discuss Key Trends in Nanophotonics and Metamaterials at METANANO 2019
METANANO 2019, the fourth conference on nanophotonics and metamaterials, has started in St. Petersburg. The annual event brings together top scientists from universities and research centers of Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the US, the UK and other countries. This year, the conference, which is organized by ITMO University’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, has an even larger geographic representation and the number of speakers and participants. ITMO University at World Conference of Science Journalists
At the beginning of July, the Swiss city of Lausanne hosted the 11th World Conference of Science Journalists, which brought together over 1,000 specialists from Europe, the US, Canada, Latin America, Asia and Australia. Russia was represented by 18 people, including members of the Association of Communicators in Education and Science (AKSON), ITMO University graduates and Master’s students in science communication, and staff of ITMO Science Communication Center. In the course of four days, they discussed the most topical questions of science journalism and communication and visited CERN and Campus Biotech, where they familiarized themselves with the principles of working in major science organizations.

IMS, DTGS and EVA: Key Events of the Information Society and Technology Week
Last week, the Information Society and Technology Week took place in St. Petersburg. ITMO University hosted three of its events: the 22nd united conference “Internet and Modern Society” (IMS-2019), the second international conference “Digital Transformations & Global Society” (DTGS-2017), and the interdisciplinary conference “EVA (Electronic Imaging & the Visual Arts) 2019 Saint Petersburg”. Some of the seminars and plenary sessions took place under the aegis of several conferences at once. For example, the open discussion on data, digital culture and digital society took place as part of the “Internet and Modern Society” conference and “EVA 2017 Saint Petersburg” conference. Twitch, Twitter and Depression: Young Researchers Present Their Projects at ITMO University Poster Session
As part of the 4th international conference “Digital Transformation and Global Society”, ITMO University has recently hosted the Forum of Young Scientists. Its main aim was to unite young Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD researchers and experienced scientists in informal discussions on their research. The students had to prepare posters on their research projects and explain them to other participants and judges.
