  • ITMO Researchers Use Hybrid Crystal to Enable Simultaneous Grayscale and Color Direct Laser Writing

    With the new material suggested by ITMO physicists, it will be possible to embed grayscale images into color ones during direct laser writing. The researchers were the first to use metal-organic frameworks for the purpose; these are optically transparent materials that can transform laser radiation. When subjected to it, the material’s structure changes, with color defects formed inside. Each such defect has a unique scattering spectrum, making metal-organic frameworks useful in producing uncloneable anti-counterfeit trademarks. The material is described in a paper published in Advanced Functional Materials.

  • Power Without Electricity: Nanodevice For Optical Computers Developed at ITMO

    Physicists from ITMO and St. Petersburg Academic University have collaborated to develop a device that can be used as a transistor in optical computers – it can create an electric field in nanostructures without the use of any power sources. In the article published in Light: Science & Applications, the research team describes the theory behind it as well as the experiments they conducted on a nanoantenna to demonstrate the capacities of the new device.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Simple Method to Create Durable Anti-Fraud Trademarks

    ITMO University physicists collaborated with experts from Laser Center to develop a new production method for holographic anti-fraud trademarks. With the new technology, it is possible to print unique multicolor 3D holograms on any metal products to protect them from counterfeit. Apart from being highly durable, the trademarks can be made using minimal equipment. The developers claim that this method is cheaper and more secure than the conventional holographic stickers.

  • New Discovery Makes Cheap, Compact Lasers Possible

    Researchers from ITMO have demonstrated a novel technique for generation of laser radiation that utilizes perovskite metasurfaces. The solution will pave the way for next-gen lasers that are less than 100 nm thick and require significantly less energy. The invention can be incorporated into compact photonic chips for light control or used as an intense light source in medicine (e.g., for tissue or blood diagnostics), materials processing, astronomy, and other fields. The results of this study were published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

  • ITMO Researchers Develop Simple Technology for Fabrication of Microfluidic Elements on Glass

    Scientists from ITMO’s Institute of Laser Technologies have developed a new technology that creates structured microfluidic elements, including channels, reservoirs, and spirals, on a silica surface. Importantly, the novel fabrication method requires only a laser and a single operator, while the resulting structures can be used in microfluidic chips for biomedical research and diagnostics of cancer, diabetes, and cardiac impairments. The results of the study are described in a recent article in Optical and Quantum Electronics.

  • ITMO Researchers Developing New Cancer Treatment Using Gold Nanoparticles and Infrared Lasers

    In recent years, oncological diseases have become one of the most wide-spread causes of death in developed countries – and despite the abundant new diagnostics and treatment methods, fighting cancer is still a challenge. Nearly all known treatments have significant side effects, while some of them are even helpless against more persistent cancer cells. One solution to this problem is photothermal therapy, on its own or in combination with other treatments.
