The last time you did an interview with us, you were residing in Berlin as an Erasmus student. It feels great to catch up with you again!
The feeling is mutual. It is always a pleasure to be associated with ITMO.
Our readers would love to know about you and your story at ITMO.
I am a physicist from Greece. I completed my Bachelor's degree at the University of Patras, Department of Physics. It was there that I started to learn Russian just before my graduation, way back in 2017. I then started searching for universities in Russia that offer higher education in physics. I ultimately ended up studying at ITMO on a full scholarship.
What did you study at ITMO?
I completed the Master's program in thermophysical processes and technologies.
When did you graduate from ITMO?
I graduated in the year 2020.
Where are you located now?
Currently, I am settled in Berlin, Germany where I am employed by a company that provides nuclear power services. I work as a physicist. As a result, I get to work at several nuclear power plants in Germany.
What do you love the most about your current life?
I actually just love my life. Maybe it’s a cliché but it is true. Even though I am crazy busy with my work nowadays, I love the fact that I am learning and building my career. I make sure to always find some time to travel and feel free.
Where do you see your career progressing next?
I definitely see a good career ahead of myself in connection to nuclear power plants. My goal for the following year is to gain more experience and, of course, get a promotion.
What do you remember the most about ITMO?
It has to be my forever friends who come from different parts of the world. They helped me settle down in St. Petersburg when I was new to the city. Gradually, we became a close-knit family.
What do you miss the most about ITMO?
I miss the Russian language courses. Unfortunately, after moving to Germany my relationship with the language is not the same. I had to learn German and as time passed, I started to forget Russian. I hope to start again soon!
Do you remember any teacher or faculty?
I will always remember Mrs. Ekaterina Komnatnaya-Gurzheeva. She has been my favorite teacher from day one. She has always been there for me. I also fondly remember my professor Vladimir Korablev who guided and supported me in successfully completing my Master’s thesis.
What was your favorite place to eat or hang out in St. Petersburg?
There are a few places etched permanently in my memory. Lomonosov was my favorite place to hang out, enjoy, and dance. I used to relax on weekends with a pint of cocktail at the Apotheke Bar. I miss these places a lot.
Would you like to share some tips with current ITMO students?
You only learn the language if you actually speak with local people. If you don't understand, just smile. There’s no shame in admitting that you are a rookie. Always trust that the next encounter will be much better.
