Hello everyone, my name is Ye Htet Aung and I am from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Currently, I am a first-year Master’s student in mobile and cloud technologies.

What do you like the most about Myanmar?

My country is full of beautiful places like Inle lake, Bagan, Kalaw, and Mandalay. We also have a very vibrant culture. Burmese people are predominantly Buddhists, so you will find a lot of enchanting pagodas all around the country.

What languages are spoken in your country?

There are numerous languages that are used in Myanmar. Different ethnic groups have their own indigenous dialects. But the official language of Myanmar is Burmese.

Which is the most popular festival for the Burmese people?

Thingyan, or the Burmese New Year, is the most coveted festival in my country. It is celebrated in mid-April over a period of four to five days and is a public holiday throughout the country.

Is there a Burmese dish that you like a lot?

My favorite Burmese dish is Mohinga. It is a very popular rice noodle and fish soup which is often considered to be the national dish of Myanmar. My mother often makes it at home and I love it. The taste always reminds me of home.

Let’s talk about your academics now. Why did you want to study in Russia?

In my opinion, Russia is one of the best places to study in the world. Its education system is of very high quality. Also, I have wanted to visit this country since my childhood. Moreover, back in my country, I served in the army for some time, so the government offered me a scholarship to study here for free.

How does it feel to be a student at ITMO?

I feel really welcomed here. Being a foreigner who isn’t quite fluent in both Russian or English, I expected to have a really hard time. But surprisingly, that didn’t happen and I could get along really well with everyone at ITMO.

Do you know any other foreign languages?

Russian! That’s the only other foreign language that I know besides English.

How would you describe the teaching style here?

It is just like I had imagined. The teachers here are really skilled. The classrooms are equipped with every modern amenity that is trending these days. Also, the curriculum is personalized and tailored to every individual’s needs. Such innovative ways of teaching really help us learn better.

What made you interested in IT?

Nowadays, IT is one of the most important sectors in the world. There is a huge demand for qualified and skilled employees in this domain. So, I wanted to sharpen my skills and make myself available on the job market with a higher probability of getting hired.

Do you like St. Petersburg?

Yes, of course! It is a very beautiful and historic place. This city has witnessed so many significant events over the centuries. I feel very privileged to be here.

Do you like Russian food?

It's good but I still prefer Burmese food because my taste buds are accustomed to it.

Where do you live now?

I live in the dormitory located on Belorusskaya st. 6A. Although it is a bit far away from the city center, it's very comfortable. Also, the locality is very peaceful. An ideal place for students to focus on their studies.

What’s your favorite football team?

I love Manchester United. I have been following them since I was a kid. They are a club with a rich history and I really love their playing style.

What are your plans for the future?

After completing my Master’s, I would like to work as an IT specialist in my country. So, the plan for now is to return to Myanmar and look for opportunities there.

Any advice for future students from Myanmar?

I would urge everyone to work hard and put their mind and soul into their dreams. With constant effort, you will be able to achieve everything in life.
