Hello Limiao, thanks for joining us today for this interview.
Thanks for the invitation. Looking forward to our conversation today.
Great. Let’s begin with your introduction.
My name is Limiao Ma and I am from Hanzhong, China. I just finished my Foundation Program and enrolled in the Master’s program in Information Security.
Tell us more about your hometown.
Hanzhong is located in the south of Shaanxi Province, between the Qinling and Bashan mountains. It has a history of more than 2,000 years and is one of China's most famous historical and cultural cities. As Hanzhong is located at the junction of North and South China, the cultures of both the regions are mixed here, hence you can find both rice and noodles here. Local foods here are mainly spicy. Due to the pleasant climate, my hometown is also called Little Jiangnan. In short, it is very suitable for long-term residence or short-term travel.
That sounds so interesting. What was growing up in Hanzhong like?
My childhood was very comfortable and happy. During the summer vacation, I would catch fish and swim in the river with my friends almost every afternoon and build sand castles on the river beach. Those were the happiest times of my life.
It sounds like it! So, what has your academic journey been like?
Before joining ITMO, I worked as a children's programming teacher for two years. Before that, I did my undergraduate studies at the Wuhan Institute of Technology.
Cool! What motivated you to study in Russia?
I chose to study in Russia because it is famous for its science and engineering prowess. There are many renowned universities here, as well, that provide high-quality education and rich academic resources. Most importantly, Russia has a unique history and culture and I was fascinated by the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of Russian traditions and customs during my study abroad period.
And how did you come across ITMO?
I got to know about ITMO because my husband studied here for many years and it is indeed a very good university as per my observation. I had absolutely no hesitation in choosing it as my first priority.
What motivated you to study information security?
I fancied this program because it helps develop better ways of protecting personal privacy, guards us against cyber threats, and provides me with rich career development opportunities.
How has your life in Russia been so far?
I think my life in Russia is both happy and difficult. I am happy because I have met very good teachers and friends. They are really very kind and well-behaved. Patience, enthusiasm, and friendliness are not enough to describe them. They have offered me great help and encouragement in study and life. My life has been difficult because there are many changes in my lifestyle that need time to adapt, besides the usual language problems that every international student needs to overcome when they come to Russia. The good news is – everything is improving slowly but surely.
What do you think about St. Petersburg?
St. Petersburg is so beautiful. I have been to the Winter Palace, Victory Park, Summer Garden, Kazan Cathedral, and many other places. I can't say which one I like best because they all have their own characteristics and each one of them is equally mesmerizing.
That’s wonderful. Have you faced any challenges yet?
The biggest challenge for me is the food. I am not used to the food here. I like spicy dishes, so I usually cook for myself. Of course, this means I have to sacrifice a lot of leisure time. Another problem is the language. At the beginning, I couldn't understand anything, but now it's much better.
Are you living in a dormitory?
Yes, I live in the dormitory located on Vyazemsky Lane 5-7. I think it is generally very convenient, with complete facilities and functions. It is very close to the subway station and surrounded by supermarkets, convenience stores, and pharmacies.
What are your hobbies?
As a kid, I loved swimming and table tennis, but now I prefer quieter activities like reading books and watching movies or just taking a walk. Recently, I have taken a liking to fantasy novels.
Have you been to other cities in Russia?
Unfortunately, I haven't yet. The places I want to visit the most are Moscow and Murmansk.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I will return to my hometown and maybe I will still choose to be a teacher.
Do you have any advice for future students at ITMO?
This is a great university with a very strong faculty. As long as you want to learn, the teachers will help you and the learning atmosphere here is also young and energetic. Just pack your luggage and come here!
