Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. Could you share something about yourself?
My name is Reham Qassem, and I am from Syria. Before joining ITMO, I studied at the University of Tartus in Syria, where I pursued a degree in information technology and communications engineering. However, after completing my degree, I felt a deep urge to continue my academic journey abroad. I’ve always had an ambition to pursue a path that feels unique and fulfilling. Listening to that inner voice is what brought me here and I couldn’t be happier with my decision.
Please tell us more about your hometown.
My hometown is Tartus, a very beautiful city located near the sea. It has a large museum and many gardens. The city looks more beautiful at night with its shining lights and bustling people. I have spent numerous evenings walking down those streets or eating in one of the restaurants there. It already feels nostalgic to talk about my hometown!
Tartus is famous for its seafood. Western foods became popular there only recently. We have our own snacks and fast food options which are very delicious.
So interesting! What was growing up in Tartous like?
During my childhood, I lived in another province in Syria called Aleppo. I grew up there and then, along with my family, we settled in Tartus. I have to say I liked Aleppo more because, after all, childhood experiences always hold a special place in the heart. My childhood was mostly calm, although there were a bit of teasing and goofing around with friends. But in general, I would describe myself as a calm person. I had many friends and we would go to school together and play. I was always the most ambitious one among my friends and family members!
What fueled your ambition to choose Russia as your destination for further studies?
I refer to Russia as the land of dreams. I have always felt that I would achieve something significant here. Russia is a sophisticated and beautiful country, offering strong support for both science and art. Its universities, particularly ITMO, are recognized worldwide, with ITMO being currently ranked highly in the QS rankings, which is appreciable!
How did you discover ITMO?
I first learned about ITMO through a friend who suggested it when I was considering studying in Russia. He recommended ITMO specifically because of its renowned reputation in the field of engineering and IT. He mentioned that students here are fortunate to have access to excellent resources, research topics, and a highly supportive environment. I also heard that many leading Russian companies collaborate with ITMO, which is very appealing.
That’s so nice. What are you studying at ITMO?
I’m currently in the Foundation Program, but next year onwards, I will be joining an English-taught Master’s degree program in information security. This is a crucial and highly in-demand field as it focuses on protecting the security procedures of organizations from disruptions, damages, or unauthorized access.
How are you feeling about the Foundation Program? Are you able to learn Russian well?
It is quite intensive, requiring a lot of dedication and consistent study. I’ve been following up with both my teachers and additional resources, such as clips on VK or YouTube, as well as listening to songs and watching cartoons. It’s vital to constantly practice, as it’s easy to forget the language without regular review.
What motivated you to study information security?
My interest in this field stemmed from my curiosity about how sensitive and confidential information is protected within various systems and companies. The thought of safeguarding against modifications, damage, or unauthorized alterations is both fascinating and critical in today’s digital landscape.
Quite interesting. How has your life been in Russia so far?
Although I’ve only been in Russia for two months, my life here has turned out exactly as I had hoped. It’s practical but also extremely busy. There’s little time for anything else! I study, meet people from different countries, and occasionally go out to explore the city and learn more about it.
What is your favorite place to hang out in St. Petersburg?
As I’ve been here for a short time, I’ve only visited a few places, but I particularly enjoyed Lakhta Center and Lenin Square. Lakhta Center is the tallest tower I’ve ever seen – it’s massive and stunning! It’s especially beautiful in the afternoon, when it’s bustling with people and loud music. The view from there is truly breathtaking.
So cool! Where do you live?
I live in an ITMO dormitory located on Lensoveta Street 23. The dorm is clean and spacious, and the staff is friendly. My roommates are also very pleasant.
Have you faced any challenges since coming to Russia?
Yes, initially, I felt overwhelmed by the sudden responsibilities that I had to fulfil. The days felt too short to complete everything and I even had thoughts of giving up and returning home. However, over time, I gradually adapted and became more proficient at managing my time. Now, I feel more in control of my life.
Indeed, adjusting to a new country takes time. Do you pursue any hobbies to relax yourself?
I have a deep appreciation for art, particularly drawing. Back in Syria, I worked as a painter and I created many portraits, focusing on capturing faces, features, and especially eyes. I love portraying the small details and emotions, especially those subtle feelings that can be seen in people’s eyes, particularly those who try to hide their emotions. I hope to further develop my art skills, participate in exhibitions here in Russia, and hopefully, make a name for myself. Additionally, I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and it remains one of my undying dreams that I plan to fulfill.
You are in the most artistic city of Russia. Have you visited any exhibitions yet?
I haven’t had the opportunity yet, but maybe during the New Year’s holidays, I will visit some of them.
Have you tried Russian food?
I haven’t had the chance to explore Russian cuisine fully yet, but I’m looking forward to trying it. I’m sure I’ll find some new favorite dishes along the way.
Absolutely. To wrap things up, what are your plans after graduation?
After completing my Master’s degree, I plan to continue my studies and pursue a PhD here as well. Ultimately, I hope to return to Syria, as the country needs skilled professionals like us to influence its development and growth.
That sounds like a solid plan. Finally, do you have any advice for future students at ITMO?
I would tell future students that they are incredibly fortunate to study at ITMO. The university offers many golden opportunities that you should make the most of. Remember that nothing is wasted here – persevere and you will definitely find your path.
So wholesome! Is there anything else you would like to add?
